In an effort to help those who would like to further their career but do not have the time to attend traditional classes, the Department of Physical Science and Technology at Southern Arkansas University, Magnolia, will offer on-line industrial technology classes.
“We want to allow students to work on their degree when they choose,” said Dr. Sam Heintz, associate professor of physical sciences and director of the industrial technology program at SAU. “Beginning in fall 2007, most of the core classes will be going on-line. This means that students will be able to take classes at their own pace, after work and on weekends, and at times of their own choosing.”
With the addition of the on-line classes, Heintz said it will be possible to complete degree requirements without coming to the Magnolia campus.
Industrial technology is a field of study designed to prepare technical and management oriented professionals for employment in business, industry, education, and government. It is primarily involved with the management, operation, and maintenance of complex technological systems.
Core classes going on-line include fundamentals of manufacturing, quality, maintenance management, production and inventory control, industrial safety, work analysis, industrial management, engineering economic analysis, manufacturing policy and ethics, and advanced manufacturing systems.
Classes to be offered in the fall of 2007 include ENGR 2023 (Fundamentals of Manufacturing), ITEC 3012 (Maintenance Management), and ITEC 3032 (Industrial Safety Management).
“These classes are introductory classes, meaning that the fall is a good time to begin the program,” said Heintz. “Interested students are encouraged to call, and I can make a degree plan for them.”
All three will be offered on-line again in the fall of 2008.
