“Languages and World Peace” is the theme for Foreign Language Month to be celebrated in March by the Department of English and Foreign Languages at Southern Arkansas University, Magnolia.
“All students are encouraged to participate,” said Dr. Elba Birmingham-Pokorny, professor of Spanish and sponsor of the Spanish Club at SAU. “We are getting ready for a big celebration.
All students currently enrolled in a Spanish course at SAU may enter the Spanish essay and poster contests. The deadline to enter both contests is 5 p.m. on Friday, March 9.
The rules for the essay contest are that it must be of two or more pages, participant can be a student of elementary, intermediate, or advanced level Spanish, students are not allowed to ask any of the Spanish faculty for assistance, each student will be judged in accordance to his or her level, the essay must be typed in Times New Roman double spaced in a size 12 font, and resources must be cited.
The rules for the poster contest include that each entry must bear only one student’s name, all posters must be 18 x 24 and prepared on white cardboard, no computer graphics or computer-generated designs will be accepted; artistic media includes water colors, felt tips, colored pencils, or collages; the poster must include the theme; foreign language(s) may be used elsewhere on the poster; entries containing spelling or grammatical errors will be disqualified; all work must be original, no copyrighted figures, slogans, etc., will be allowed; the student’s name, professor’s name, language and course number must be written on the back of the poster; the poster must be flat and neatly wrapped; affix a copy of the entry submission form to the outside and include a duplicate on the inside of the package; only posters that meet the rules will be eligible for judging; and the flat and neatly wrapped poster may be delivered to Pokorny’s office and/or the main office I Wilson 326.
Prizes for both contests include $50 for first place, $25 for second, and $15 for third.
An awards ceremony for the foreign language poster and essay contests will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 23 in Wilson 327.
A literary reading will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 16, in Wilson 327.
A film, “Letters from the Other Side,” will be shown at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 22, in Wilson 327.
