MAGNOLIA, Ark.— Student organizations are banding together to fundraise for fellow classmate Trey Von Sutton, 21, who is battling a rare form of bone cancer called Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma.
On this past Friday afternoon, November 2, the Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority held a hamburger lunch fundraiser at the Greek Theatre which raised $1,423. Later that evening, members of the Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority traveled with members of Sutton’s fraternity, Phi Lambda Chi, to attend a football game at Sutton’s high school alma matter, Redwater High School, for more donations. The group raised $820 in that effort.
Sutton, a senior who is seeking a degree in general business, is now in Houston where he is undergoing multiple chemotherapy sessions at The University of Texas M D Anderson Cancer Center. Sutton said he appreciates the efforts being made by the organizations to help him.
In addition to other efforts, white bracelets bearing the phrase, “Makes Me Stronger,” are also being sold around campus for $2 each.
“We appreciate all the help we can get and my family appreciates everyone in Magnolia keeping us in their prayers,” said Sutton in a phone interview.
In addition to the cost of medical bills, Sutton and his family also have to pay for an apartment in Houston while he undergoes his treatments. Because they do not intend on staying long enough to sign a lease, rent is $1,800 a month.
Additional fundraising is being planned on the campus and Phi Mu Fraternity intends to contribute a portion of the proceeds from an upcoming event they will be hosting to Sutton.
