Top scholars from around the world were invited to participate in a book dedicated to Cuban writer Julian del Casal. Dr. Elba Birmingham-Pokorny, a professor of Spanish at Southern Arkansas University, Magnolia, was one of those scholars.
“I was truly honored to be a part of this wonderful project,” said Pokorny. “Julian del Casal is considered one of the forerunners of the modernist movement in Latin America.”
Professors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, Northern Illinois University, the Universidad de Costa Rica, Florida Southern College, and the University of Central Florida also collaborated for the book.
In December 2005, a ceremony was conducted in Nicaragua to formally present the book in a special ceremony. The book was published in Nicaragua, and the ceremony was attended by the Minister of Culture.
“It was a very emotional moment,” said Pokorny, “when we attended a special ceremony commemorating the publication of the book.”
Pokorny’s article is “Cuerpo, mujer y marginalidad: una [re] lectura criticadel modelo identitario de la patria, del ser y de la cubanidad en la obra de Julian del Casal.”
