Are you interested in agriculture? Business? Greek life? Education? Nursing? Performing arts? Computer Science? If so, then now is the time to sign up for one of the Residential Interest Groups to be offered by Southern Arkansas University, Magnolia.
Beginning in the fall of 2006, students will have an opportunity to live in the same residence hall with people who have the same interests as them.
“Residential Interest Groups are living and learning options for all students living in the residence halls,” said Sandra Smith. “Groups will live together on a specific floor based on their interests. No matter what your interests are, there is a Residential Interest Group for you.”
Prospective and current students can apply online now and choose which group they want to live with.
The communities also foster a living and learning environment through campus involvement, academic support, and peer and professional staff members committed to helping students succeed during their college career.
“The communities are based on interests, not majors,” said Smith. “We want to give students an opportunity to develop friendships with those who have similar interests as them.”
There are 14 Residential Interest Groups for students to choose from. The interest groups include Agriculture, Best in Business, Greek, Education, Freshmen Year Experience, Health and Wellness, Honors College, Mule.org, Nursing, Performing Arts, Pre-professional, Residential College, Sophomore Year Experience, and Computer Science.
“During the first semester, we want to provide our students with as many choices as possible,” said Smith. “We will reevaluate each of the interest groups at the end of the year to see which ones are being utilized the most.”
Smith is optimistic that the interest groups will be successful.
“A lot of universities outside of Arkansas have these programs and they seem to be working very well,” she said.
