Honor Professor 2006 Dr. Lynne Belcher will be the guest speaker at the December 2006 commencement ceremony to be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 15, in the W.T. Watson Athletic Center on the campus of Southern Arkansas University, Magnolia.
Belcher is a professor of English at SAU, where she has taught for 16 years. She received her doctor of arts in English with an emphasis on language and linguistics from Illinois State University in 1989. She teaches courses in grammar and linguistics as well as freshman composition and sophomore literature courses.
She coordinates the English proficiency testing of in-coming international students and has served on a number of committees at SAU. She served three terms on the Faculty Senate and was president during the 1999-2000 school year. She has made numerous presentations at regional, national, and international conferences.
Belcher has several publications, most recently, “A Shifting Weight of Responsibility: ‘Balancing’ Teaching, Service, and Scholarship,” published as part of the anthology Teaching, Research, and Service in the Twenty-First Century English Department by the Edwin Mellen Press in 2004. She founded the student organization the Emerging Writers Club and served as its sponsor for 10 years. She currently serves as director of the Honors College, a program which she created and has developed.
A reception for graduates will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Blue and Gold Room of the Donald W. Reynolds Campus and Community Center.
