The Arkansas Society of Certified Public Accountants selected Dr. Terrye Stinson, dean of the College of Business at Southern Arkansas University, Magnolia, as the recipient of the 2006 ASCPA Distinguished Achievement in Accounting Education award.
This award serves to recognize full-time college accounting educators distinguished for excellence in teaching and for involvement in the accounting profession.
“This award is a distinct honor,” said Stinson. “I have always enjoyed working with students and am particularly appreciative of the Arkansas Society’s recognition of my work in the classroom.”
Nominees for the award must be current full-time or recently retired accounting educators at a post-secondary educational institution, be distinguished for excellence in classroom teaching and motivating students, and contributing to the accounting profession through active involvement in accounting activities, or national professional accounting organizations.
Stinson received her undergraduate degree in accounting summa cum laude from SAU in 1976. She received a master of business administration degree in accounting I 1983 from Louisiana Tech University, where she also received a doctorate of business administration in accounting in 1989. Stinson is a certified public accountant and has managed a career in public accounting since 1977 in a limited private practice firm.
In 1980, Stinson became a member of the accounting faculty at SAU. She was selected as the 1993 Honor Professor, the University’s highest faculty award recognizing outstanding classroom teaching, academic excellence, and public service. She has served in several capacities including the Louis J. Blanchard Professorship in Accounting from 2000 to present. She was chair of the Department of Accounting and Computer Information Systems from 1993 to 2002. In 2002 she assumed her current position as dean of the College of Business, where she is responsible for curriculum development and assessment of student learning.
Stinson holds various academic and professional service memberships. She is a member of the Arkansas Society of Certified Public Accountants and is chair of the ASCPA Accounting Principles and Auditing Committee. She is a past president of the South Arkansas Chapter of Certified Public Accountants. In addition, Stinson has served as vice president of Arkansas College Teachers of Economics and Business. She is a member of the American Accounting Association, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Southern Business Administration Association, and the Southwestern Business Deans Association. Currently, she is serving a five-year term on the Arkansas State Board of Public Accountancy.
Stinson and her husband, Jim, live in El Dorado where they are members of the College Avenue Church of Christ. They have four grown children and seven grandchildren.
The Arkansas Society of CPAs will formally recognize Stinson at the ASCPA Annual Convention Awards Banquet to be held July 14, at the Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach, Ala. Stinson will become the Arkansas nominee for the National AICPA Distinguished Achievement in Accounting Education Award.
