Twenty-eight students felt a tap on their shoulder as they were invited to become members of Beta Gamma Sigma, the new honor society in the College of Business at Southern Arkansas University, Magnolia.
“Only the best business students in the world, and the professionals who earned the distinction of best in business during their academic careers, can claim membership in Beta Gamma Sigma,” said Sheila Pearson, associate professor of management information systems at SAU. “This year’s Beta Gamma Sigma inductees from SAU have certainly earned that title.”
Students ranking in the top seven percent of the junior class and top 10 percent of the senior class are eligible for membership.
The inaugural dinner and induction ceremony will be held on Tuesday, April 4, in Grand Hall of the Donald W. Reynolds Campus and Community Center.
Beta Gamma Sigma is the honor society for students enrolled in business and management programs accredited by AACSB International. The College of Business at SAU recently achieved accreditation by AACSB International. As a result of this achievement, the College has established a chapter of the honor society.
“Election to lifetime membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest honor a business student anywhere in the world can receive in an undergraduate program at a school accredited by AACSB International,” said Pearson.
“Tapping” is the method used to invite students into membership. Beta Gamma Sigma faculty members visit selected business classes attired in academic regalia and formally present invitations during class. SAU faculty members visited business classes and tapped eligible business students. Faculty members participating in the ceremony included Dr. Terrye Stinson, dean of the College of Business; Gerald Plumlee, instructor of management information systems; Dr. Sam Riner, associate professor of accounting; and Dr. Tim Wise, associate professor of management and marketing.
