Now through the end of November, the Rosemary Rhea Regional Arts in Education Center and Gallery will exhibit a traveling exhibition from the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock.
The exhibition, “Fifty Years of the American Landscape,” can be seen on the first floor of Magale Library, located on the campus of Southern Arkansas University, Magnolia. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
“The landscape as a pure subject is one of the great traditions in art – one that continues to carry momentum from the 19th century of Europe and America,” said Brian Young, curator at the Arts Center. “Today, the landscape is thought by many to be nostalgic and conservative. This exhibition, however, focuses on a span roughly between the years 1910-60. This was a time of pictorial evolution including renderings that are very expressive and bordering on the abstract.”
Some of the more recognizable artists included in this exhibition are Oscar Bluemner, William Zorach, Ansel Adams (photographer), and the legendary Arkansas painter Louis Freund. In addition to the deep range of artists, there are works in many media. Viewers will have the opportunity to see the landscape rendered through watercolor, photography, pastels, ink, and print. The exhibition is meant to be aesthetically pleasing and educationally challenging for visitors of all ages and interests.
All Arkansas Arts Center touring programs are supported in part by the Arkansas Arts Council, an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage and the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art. Season sponsors include the Wal-Mart Foundation.
