How does the selection process work?
- Each candidate will complete the online application for the position.
- The SAU Mascot Advisory Committee will review the applicants and select no more than ten candidates to participate in the interview process.
- After the initial interview, the top candidates will participate in a mascot try-out with the committee.
- The top 3 candidates will be selected based on the highest scores based on the combination of the application, interview, and try-out scores.
- The newly selected Spirit Mascots will begin their duties in August 2024.

Eligibility Requirements:
- Height Requirement: (5’10” – 6’2”)
- Students must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at Southern Arkansas University.
- Students must have and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.50 on a 4.0 scale.
What are the responsibilities of the Mulerider Spirit Mascots?
- Embody and abide by the principles of inclusion, integrity, respect, service, and social justice for all in the SAU tradition of feeling like home.
- Demonstrate pride in the SAU experience.
- Create an excellent customer experience while serving as a student ambassador at all events.
- Know the history and traditions of SAU and the Mulerider.
- Demonstrate a positive attitude, strong work ethic, willingness to learn, and a desire to work with people and commit to developing and taking leadership, communication, and customer experience skills to the next level.
- When representing SAU, the Spirit Mascots shall not use any drugs or alcohol, shall not smoke, vape, or chew tobacco. Communications such as texting or phone calls during Mulerider activities should be limited. All social media should reflect the image as official representatives of Southern Arkansas University.

- Abide by the SAU Student Code of Conduct.
- Spirit Mascots are responsible for all SAU-issued property and must pay for any of those items that are lost or damaged. These items may only be used for official SAU functions.
- Further responsibilities and guidelines may be added by the SAU Mascot Advisory Committee as needed. The Mulerider and Spirit Mascots must sign an agreement upon their selection outlining further requirements
Expectations
- There will be responsibilities on nights and weekends.
- Must attend ALL trainings, meetings, and events, including required such as orientation and training activities unless excused for good reason and regular meeting schedule.
- Perform at SAU designated events including but not limited to appearances at numerous sporting events throughout the year, Mulegating, recruitment activities, and other designated events for the benefit and promotion of SAU.
- Must be prepared to adjust your personal schedule from time-to-time based on obligations as a spirit mascot. There will be many scheduled events. However, there will also be last-minute requests for the appearance of the spirit mascots that will be to be fulfilled.
- Since being a Spirit Mascot requires a significant amount of physical activity, prior to beginning your duties, you will be required to obtain a general physical examination to ensure that you are physically capable of safely performing all of the Spirit Mascot duties and must provide verification of medical clearance from a physician. You must also provide proof of current health insurance.
- Serve in the position for a one-year term. Renewal of the position is possible upon a year-end review of performance.
