The method is quite simple and the &#8220;secrets&#8221; are set out below. At SAU, we contend that a well-prepared audition will reveal two major aspects of<br \/>\na performer. These often conform to who you are and what you can do. First, we would like to see your personality, your strengths, your love of the arts, and the uniqueness that makes you &#8220;you.&#8221; Second, we will be evaluating your skills: your voice, your physical presence, your intellect, and your emotional availability. This second area is evaluated as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Vocal and Musical Ability.<\/strong> Good pitch, a rhythmic sense, a pleasing vocal quality; articulation that is clear and appropriate to the context of the song or monologue.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Physical Awareness.<\/strong> General poise and stage deportment, freedom and ease of movement; general posture, use of hands in an unselfconscious manner, and the free and natural use of the body.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Communication Skills.<\/strong> Energy that is focused, communication with the audience (sharing), involvement; identification with the subject of the song or monologue, and the creation of a believable &#8220;reality&#8221; on the stage. Understanding of the text and the \u201cgivens\u201d of the song or monologue. Capable of experiencing a range of emotions and demonstrating the ability to share these with the observers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Development of Style.<\/strong> The integration of the techniques of acting, voice, and movement into the successful performance of selections from the musical theatre repertoire. The development of personal skills and an awareness of self.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What if I\u2019m auditioning for technical theatre?<\/h3>\n<p>We are most interested in who you are; your portfolio is a way of learning more about you. We also understand that your portfolio is a product of your opportunities so don\u2019t worry about what<br \/>\nyou don\u2019t have, include what you do have. Your interview will not be a formal presentation of your work, it will be a conversation with teachers about you, what you\u2019ve done, your interests, and your goals.<\/p>\n<h3>What should I wear?<\/h3>\n<p>Wear something that makes you look and feel great. Whether that\u2019s a dress and heels, a skirt and sweater, a suit and tie, or a dress shirt with khakis or jeans, make sure you are comfortable. Also,<br \/>\nfeel free to show your personality in what you wear!<\/p>\n<h3>Should my material be memorized? And what happens if I have a memory slip?<\/h3>\n<p>Yes! Having your material memorized will allow you to use your entire body and inhabit each story you are telling. If you have a memory slip, just ask if you can start your song or monologue<br \/>\nover again. We don\u2019t penalize anyone for memory slips.<\/p>\n<h3>Can I bring a speaker or pre-recorded music to my audition?<\/h3>\n<p>No. At your audition, all music will be performed with a live pianist, provided by SAU Theatre. You will need to supply the pianist with a legally purchased copy of your music. We recommend<br \/>\nhole-punching your music and placing it in a 1-inch binder. Make sure you have clearly marked any cuts in your music, including where you are beginning and ending, and any internal cuts you<br \/>\nhave made. If you have questions about selecting audition cuts or cutting your music, feel free to email Michael Womack at mwwomack@saumag.edu<\/p>\n<h3>Why didn\u2019t you ask for a 32-bar cut of my song?<\/h3>\n<p>Often a strict 32-bar cut of a song won\u2019t allow you to tell a full story or finish a musical phrase. So instead, by having you create a cut of each of your songs that is around 1 minute long, we will get to hear you tell a more complete story in each of your song cuts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How will my audition be evaluated?
