He earned his B.S. in Biology from Bowling Green State University, Ohio, and his Ph.D. in Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology from Ohio State University. He then served as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Southern Mississippi\u2019s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory. He was an Assistant Professor of Biology at SAU and Eastern New Mexico University before rejoining the faculty at SAU. Dr.Filbrun is generally interested in understanding how early-life feeding, development, and growth of fishes impacts recruitment to adult populations. He has completed projects to improve the production efficiency of catfishes in aquaculture systems, understand how ichthyoplankton in the northern Gulf of Mexico responded to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and monitor drifting fish egg and larval assemblages in the Pecos River, New Mexico. Students in his lab enjoy hands-on training in the field and laboratory to explore the biology and\/or early life history of crustaceans, fishes, and corals. Filbrun teaches Principles of Biology I, Ecology, Ichthyology, Marine Biology, Global Environmental Change, Biostatistics, and Oceanography.
