{"id":774,"date":"2012-08-22T08:57:38","date_gmt":"2012-08-22T13:57:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/parents\/?p=774"},"modified":"2013-07-23T14:01:28","modified_gmt":"2013-07-23T19:01:28","slug":"what-to-bring-to-college-beyond-the-basics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/parents\/blog\/2012\/08\/22\/what-to-bring-to-college-beyond-the-basics\/","title":{"rendered":"What to Bring to College&#8230;Beyond the Basics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Move-in day is approaching quickly.\u00a0 The basic essentials for residence hall rooms and necessities for college are listed on every store and online retailers\u2019 pages, but they only give the basics.\u00a0 Here are a few extras that may come in handy for your college student.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Single cup coffee\/tea makers<\/strong> will be a great addition for students who love to have a daily dose of coffee or tea to get them going.\u00a0 University Housing prefers coffee and tea makers need to have an automatic shutoff.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>E-readers<\/strong> for students that like to read will save your back from aching from lugging a crate of books to their room.\u00a0 E-readers are available from many national bookstore chains and Amazon.com.\u00a0 They are able to store hundreds of books, magazines, and newspapers for entertainment.\u00a0 Some textbooks are also available for download on some of these devices, but the student may want to check with their professor before purchasing it on their e-reader.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cleaning supplies will come in handy throughout the semester.\u00a0 There is no mom or maid service around to clean their residence hall room.\u00a0 A <strong>mop, broom, and cleaning products<\/strong> are things that will be needed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Throws\/blankets<\/strong> really come in handy in chilly residence hall rooms.\u00a0 Students can control their room temperatures, however, both students in the may not like the temperatures the same. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Rooms are not carpeted so <strong>rugs <\/strong>can keep feet warm in the mornings when jumping out of bed. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Posters\/pictures<\/strong> can give a room character and, in reality, few people want to stay in a room with bare walls.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Since the cellular phone and e-mail made its debut, postal mail has dropped on list of means of communication. However, it is nice to have some <strong>stamps<\/strong> around to mail a handwritten letter to parent, grandparents, siblings, or even pay a bill.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Storage containers<\/strong>, which fit underneath a bed, will add extra storage space within the room and alleviate any unwanted clutter.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Air fresheners<\/strong> and Scentsy type room fragrances can help a student\u2019s room feel like home or mask the odor of the laundry that is piled up in the closet. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Surge protectors<\/strong> are great for plugging up major electrical items like a computer, refrigerator, microwave, and television.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Lamps<\/strong> are useful when up late studying and a roommate is trying to sleep.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Students will occasionally experiment with microwave recipes.\u00a0 Since every residence hall room has a sink, <strong>dishes<\/strong> can easily be washed.
