Welcome back!\u00a0 As we kick off the spring 2011 semester at Southern Arkansas University, we want to let you know about some of the exciting things happening at our university.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Rave Mobile:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 The University Police Department has launched a new emergency notification program called Rave Mobile for current SAU students.\u00a0 This new notification system will allow students to receive text messaging, as well as, email alerts when there is an emergency, severe weather alert, or school closure.\u00a0 Students may go to the University Police Department website<\/a> to complete their profile information for the service.\u00a0 Parents, family, and community members are still encouraged to sign up for AlertXpress<\/a> to receive similar emergency notifications.<\/p>\n Social Greek Recruitment:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 The Office of Student Activities kicks off spring social fraternity and sorority recruitment next week.\u00a0 SAU students who have completed 12 credit hours at SAU and have at least a 2.40 GPA are eligible to join a social fraternity or sorority.\u00a0 However, it is important for your student to find out more information about the organizations he or she is interested in because some organizations may require more credit hours or a higher GPA.\u00a0 If your student is interested in joining a fraternity or sorority this semester, encourage him or her to visit the SAU Greek organization tables in the Reynolds Center this week.\u00a0 For more information, your student can contact Kandice Herron or Haley Burrow in the Office of Student Activities, Reynolds 201.<\/p>\n MAC Tournament Series:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 Again this semester, the MAC is hosting a variety of tournament series for SAU students, faculty, and staff.\u00a0 This week, several students are competing in pickle ball, a competitive sport similar to tennis.\u00a0 Other tournaments this semester include cricket, quick ball, soccer, ladder golf, washers, Xbox 360 gaming, spades, dominoes, walleyball, and ultimate frisbee.\u00a0 For more information, your student may contact Sarah Adcox at sarahadcox@saumag.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n Alternate Spring Break 2011:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 If your student is interested in participating in volunteer work and having an exciting spring break, the SAU Alternative Spring Break 2011 trip (March 19 \u2013 24, 2011) might be perfect for him or her.\u00a0 In its second year, this trip will take a group of SAU students to Houston, Texas for a week of fun and service.\u00a0 Students will participate in a local community project as well as volunteer with Houston food banks and the Galveston Bay.\u00a0 In addition, students will have the opportunity to visit several museums, entertainment venues, and a professional sporting event.\u00a0 The cost of the trip is $200 plus 10 meals.\u00a0 The trip fee includes lodging, transportation, trip t-shirts, event fees, and breakfast.\u00a0 Students interested in participating in the trip may contact Nicole Woods, student program coordinator, at stulife@saumag.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n While this is just a small snapshot of the events happening at SAU, we hope you will encourage your student to check his or her student email frequently so your student will not miss any of the important announcements or messages from the University.\u00a0 They may
