{"id":8773,"date":"2021-09-23T14:13:29","date_gmt":"2021-09-23T19:13:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/?p=8773"},"modified":"2021-09-23T14:13:29","modified_gmt":"2021-09-23T19:13:29","slug":"sau-provides-relief-items-to-aid-in-damage-from-hurricane-ida","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/2021\/sau-provides-relief-items-to-aid-in-damage-from-hurricane-ida\/","title":{"rendered":"SAU provides relief items to aid in damage from Hurricane Ida"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>MAGNOLIA \u2013<\/strong> Residents of south Louisiana once again recently battled mother nature as Hurricane Ida ripped through their towns.\u00a0 In response to an urgent need, Southern Arkansas University has collected disaster relief items for residents of Lafourche Parish, Louisiana.<\/p>\n<p>SAU began collecting the items on Sept. 7, setting up drop-off bins and tents at various areas around campus. Athletics, Greeks, Housing, AmeriCorps VISTA, Mulerider Market, Student Activities, Aramark Food Services, College of Education and Human Performance, and numerous other students, were some that led the way in collecting such items as bottled water, hygiene products, tarps, work gloves, cleaning supplies, and other needed items.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8775 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2021\/09\/BradLA21-4-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"446\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2021\/09\/BradLA21-4-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2021\/09\/BradLA21-4-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2021\/09\/BradLA21-4-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2021\/09\/BradLA21-4-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2021\/09\/BradLA21-4-scaled.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 446px) 100vw, 446px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so proud of our campus-wide effort,\u201d said Dr. Donna Allen, vice president for Student Affairs. \u201cThe unique caring that SAU is known for was evident and has come through for the people of Raceland in a huge way!\u201d The hurricane made landfall in Lafourche Parish.<\/p>\n<p>Arien Faucett, assistant professor and program director of Sport Management at SAU, brought the need for disaster relief to the attention of the campus. She is a new faculty member with a personal connection to Raceland, having grown up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. \u201cThe wind did a great deal of damage to structures and infrastructure, making it an incredibly difficult situation to overcome,\u201d she said. One family died in their home after managing to survive the storm due to CO2 poisoning from their generator. \u201cIt\u2019s just gut-wrenching,\u201d said Faucett.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am completely inspired by and in awe of the SAU community,\u201d said Faucett. She reached out to Dr. Trey Berry, president of SAU, and Dr. Kim Bloss, dean of the College of Education and Human Performance, to see if a relief effort would be possible. \u201cTo say that they quickly rallied the necessary people would be an understatement,\u201d said Faucett.\u00a0 She noted that one Lafourche Parish resident, Trudy Adams, passed along her thanks and gratitude for the Mulerider effort.<\/p>\n<p>Faucett thanked Allen, Brad Stout, director of Student Affairs Facilities, and Coach Steve Browning, director of Athletics, as well as others who were \u201cimmediately supportive and so generous with their time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stout, who was en route to Raceland with the supplies, said the response was another example of SAU\u2019s caring for those in the immediate region. \u201cArien had reached out to her contacts in Raceland to see how they were doing after the storm,\u201d Stout said, \u201cand brought this opportunity to our attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Stout and his team loaded a trailer with donated items collected over the past couple of weeks and were transporting it to the Larose Regional Park and Civic Center for distribution.<\/p>\n<p>Stout noted, \u201cOur athletic department had an opportunity at the game this past Saturday to collect cash donations.\u00a0 There were drop-off bins on Family Day outside of Wilkins Stadium, at the residence halls, and at other designated areas on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a good project for us to be involved with,\u201d Stout explained. \u201cWe take care of our local community, but we have the ability and manpower to reach out to those in need within a reasonable distance of our campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8777 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2021\/09\/BradLA21-6-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"413\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2021\/09\/BradLA21-6-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2021\/09\/BradLA21-6-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2021\/09\/BradLA21-6-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2021\/09\/BradLA21-6-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2021\/09\/BradLA21-6-scaled.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 413px) 100vw, 413px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He thanked Dr. Allen and the SAU administration as well as corporate donors including Brookshire\u2019s, Atwoods, and Mac\u2019s Fresh Market for donating cash as well as cases of water and other supplies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe help offered by the SAU community shows that even in the darkest of times, people still have an incredible capacity to reach out and support one another,\u201d said Faucett. \u201cThe world needs more SAU campuses and Muleriders.
