\"\"<\/a> Dr. Antoinette Odendaal, assistant professor of Biology and Chemistry in the College of Science and Engineering at Southern Arkansas University, secured a $20,000 pilot study research grant from the IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE).<\/p>\n

The grant period is for spring 2019 and provides support for Odendaal and one undergraduate student. The research centers on\u00a0in vivo\u00a0examination of the obesogenic effects of heterocyclic amines from cooked meat using\u00a0Daphnia\u00a0magna\u00a0as a\u00a0test organism. The species has historically been used to assess the adverse effects of industrial chemicals and contaminants in the environment and in ecosystems.\u00a0D. magna\u00a0had not previously been used to investigate the\u00a0in vivo\u00a0effects of dietary chemicals and food additives.<\/p>\n

Odendaal has long been interested in studying the effects of dietary supplements on the growth and reproduction of\u00a0D. magna. She has established a\u00a0Daphnia\u00a0toxicology research laboratory at SAU and successfully recruited and mentored undergraduate students in her research projects.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know the importance of getting students involved in research as I have benefitted myself as an undergraduate from working closely with faculty mentors on their research projects,\u201d Odendaal said. \u201cStudents have been involved in maintaining\u00a0Daphnia\u00a0cultures, preparing algae for feed, and setting up and conducting toxicological experiments.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Over five years, Odendaal has received several SAU Faculty Research Awards for assessing the antimicrobial properties of various\u00a0Callicarpa Americana\u00a0plant parts and for evaluating the safety of dietary supplements in\u00a0D. magna. She has also mentored several undergraduate students who received their own SAU Undergraduate Research Grants. Results from these projects have been presented at several Arkansas Academy of Science meetings. She also contributed to an Arkansas INBRE Shared Research Grant in 2016, for which SAU acquired a motorized fluorescence microscope with a camera capable of capturing fluorescence and bright field images. She has used her awards to equip her research laboratory.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot only is scientific research where the \u2018rubber meets the road\u2019 with respect to scientific understanding and practical application, but research experience is what gives our graduates a competitive edge when applying to pre-professional and graduate schools,\u201d Odendaal said. \u201cSAU has been very supportive of undergraduate research.\u201d<\/p>\n

Undergraduates assisting in Odendaal\u2019s research are from both Biology and Chemistry tracks, allowing for multidisciplinary collaborative research projects where individual contribution is required for the success of a project.<\/p>\n

\u201cStudents get to build technical laboratory skills and acquire proficiencies in various aspects of research,\u201d Odendaal said. \u201cAfter a semester of gaining research experience, I encourage students to apply for their own SAU undergraduate research grant.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added that it is important to obtain external research funding in order to establish the necessary infrastructure required to support research. With her INBRE grant she has purchased a fluorescence microplate reader for assessing the lipid alteration in\u00a0D.\u00a0magna. Additionally, this instrument can be used for a broad range of research applications and thus strengthens SAU’s research capabilities.<\/p>\n

\u201cDue to the multidisciplinary nature of her teaching and research interests, Dr. Odendaal was able to attract a wide range of undergraduates who have reported on their research results at various professional meetings. I am very glad she was able to secure this award, which will create further opportunities for more students down the road. Dr. Odendaal is a great research mentor,\u201d said Dr. Abdel Bachri, dean of the College of Science and Engineering.<\/p>\n
