{"id":6410,"date":"2017-09-25T16:16:40","date_gmt":"2017-09-25T21:16:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/?p=6410"},"modified":"2017-09-25T16:16:40","modified_gmt":"2017-09-25T21:16:40","slug":"sau-student-puts-skills-work-mexico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/2017\/sau-student-puts-skills-work-mexico\/","title":{"rendered":"SAU student puts her skills to work in Mexico"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/09\/Taylor-McNeel-in-Mexico-3.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6411\" src=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/09\/Taylor-McNeel-in-Mexico-3-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/09\/Taylor-McNeel-in-Mexico-3-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/09\/Taylor-McNeel-in-Mexico-3.jpg 504w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>Taylor McNeel, a senior Agriculture Business major at Southern Arkansas University, got the opportunity this past summer to put her Spanish-speaking skills to work as well as her desire to serve others at an orphanage in Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>McNeel was able to travel to Magdalena, Sonora, on an internship she obtained through The Fatted Calf, a non-profit organization that provides training and career development to the fatherless and less-privileged of Mexico. \u201cIt is a group home where children are placed through foster care,\u201d McNeel said. \u201cI found out about The Fatted Calf through Future Farmers of America. Because I\u2019m majoring in agribusiness and minoring in Spanish, they would tell me that I really needed to pursue an internship in Mexico. It sounded pretty perfect.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>McNeel, a former state and national president of FFA, said she applied for the internship in December 2016 and was accepted a few months later. She left initially for Sonora in May, but had to return for a few weeks due to a prior obligation. She returned to the group home to continue her work in July.<\/p>\n<p>A team of U.S. missionaries established a \u201c4-H-type experience\u201d for the 50 or so children who live in the home. \u201cThe Fatted Calf provides work opportunities for these children. There is a farm and a meat-processing business that provides jobs for older residents of the orphanage.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It helps give them confidence and a sense of responsibility.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Fatted Calf interns come in the summer to teach classes in agriculture and other technical skills. \u201cI taught a woodworking class, public speaking, and working with horses and chickens,\u201d McNeel said. In just five weeks, the interns prepared the children to participate in Expo Esperanza, or \u201cHope Expo,\u201d which she described as similar to a county fair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt helps give them confidence and a sense of responsibility,\u201d McNeel explained.<\/p>\n<p>Magdalena is located about three hours south of Tucson, Arizona. McNeel said it was her first time traveling to Mexico.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/09\/Taylor-McNeel-in-Mexico-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6413\" src=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/09\/Taylor-McNeel-in-Mexico-1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/09\/Taylor-McNeel-in-Mexico-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/09\/Taylor-McNeel-in-Mexico-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/09\/Taylor-McNeel-in-Mexico-1-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/09\/Taylor-McNeel-in-Mexico-1.jpg 792w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u201cI took three years of Spanish in high school and I was encouraged to continue taking Spanish in college,\u201d she said. \u201cI realized that agriculture is a global business. Farmers and ranchers sell the products abroad, and there is a huge immigrant workforce. I saw an opportunity to land a career in which I interact with trade and immigration policymakers and travel abroad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her experience in Magdalena \u201cexposed me to the experience of living in a foreign country and speaking Spanish to Hispanics in their country,\u201d she said. \u201cI also got a chance to understand how agriculture works in Mexico and how products there are exported across the border. I think that understanding those relationships will benefit me down the road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McNeel accompanied four other interns to Mexico and lived on a campus encompassing several different group homes, a school and a church. \u201cWe lived in co-ed dorms, and the students we worked with were ages 6 to 18. A lot of these students were lacking in confidence, the ability to make decisions, so it was incredible to put them in a learning situation with animals, in which they had to build trusting relationships and be able to work with those animals.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>She\u2019d call me over to help, and one day she picked up the horse\u2019s foot and said, \u2018Look!\u2019 It was enough just to see the excitement on her face to be able to do that.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In shop classes, the children were taught to overcome their fear of working with tools, and indeed learned how to operate machinery and equipment used in woodworking. \u201cIn the short time I was there, I was able to see the progression, and they will continue to develop,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>One child worked with a horse that liked to kick its rear legs, McNeel said. \u201cShe\u2019d call me over to help, and one day she picked up the horse\u2019s foot and said, \u2018Look!\u2019 It was enough just to see the excitement on her face to be able to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McNeel said she was able to take skills she learned in shop classes in high school and at SAU, translate them into Spanish and teach them to young children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMagdalena is a town of about 20,000 people, but it reminded me a lot of Magnolia,\u201d she said. \u201cWe lived 5-10 minutes outside town, but we would go into town a few times a week. In general, everyone in Mexican culture is very nice. People will stop and help you. I was very appreciative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/09\/Taylor-McNeel-in-Mexico-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6412\" src=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/09\/Taylor-McNeel-in-Mexico-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/09\/Taylor-McNeel-in-Mexico-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/09\/Taylor-McNeel-in-Mexico-2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/09\/Taylor-McNeel-in-Mexico-2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/09\/Taylor-McNeel-in-Mexico-2.jpg 1152w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>She said there are many misconceptions about safety in Mexico. \u201cI always felt very safe,\u201d she said. \u201cWe could walk around, go to restaurants, and feel very welcomed. There is value in seeing how other people do things. You are able to connect with someone from different backgrounds even when you have nothing else in common. It brings to life a lot of things you learn in the classroom. Seeing those concepts applied in real life has tremendous value.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also learned that \u201ctextbook Spanish\u201d isn\u2019t necessarily spoken in Mexico. \u201cIn the academic setting, you learn general Spanish, but in that part of Mexico, they\u2019ll phrase things differently or use different words. They\u2019ll say, \u2018we don\u2019t use that term,\u2019 or, \u2018they use it in South America.\u2019 It gave me a real understanding of where I am in learning Spanish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the five weeks, the children and interns participated in the Expo. \u201cThey could exhibit their projects, from cookies to electronics to livestock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arts and crafts; the performing arts; stage acting; games and activities and fair food were all part of the Expo. \u201cIt was cool to see the students set goals and strive to meet them,\u201d McNeel said. \u201cThe entire goal of the summer was to have a project to enter in the fair. I taught woodworking, and that means teaching them tool identification, safety rules, and going over all the equipment and how each piece of it works. They got to drill, hammer nails, sand wood, and do their own projects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Older students were given plans for wood projects and allowed to \u201cwork their way through and ask questions. They built toolboxes and birdhouses, picture frames and candle holders. They had a fully furnished shop that was used in the repair or construction of houses, so all the equipment was available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope to stay connected to the students and the mission,\u201d McNeel said. \u201cThey have made it known that we are welcome back.
