{"id":6023,"date":"2017-03-29T10:21:06","date_gmt":"2017-03-29T15:21:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/?p=6023"},"modified":"2017-03-29T10:21:46","modified_gmt":"2017-03-29T15:21:46","slug":"saus-look-day-promotes-pedestrian-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/2017\/saus-look-day-promotes-pedestrian-safety\/","title":{"rendered":"SAU\u2019s \u2018Look Up Day\u2019 promotes pedestrian safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Adorning shirts with a logo of a silhouetted student on a cell phone walking in front of an automobile, the need to be alert and safe was the message shared by Southern Arkansas University faculty, staff and student representatives who were stationed at crosswalks across campus Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe started this project wanting to protect our students, faculty and staff because they are our most precious commodity here at SAU, and I think we have taken the first step toward that goal,\u201d said Deana Taylor, president of the SAU Staff Senate and chair of the Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Committee.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Look Up: Be Alert\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IaMxL7705Kg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The record-setting growth at SAU has transformed campus with new facilities, academic programs, and more activity and energy on campus. It has also caused the streets and crosswalks to be busier, and with technology capturing everyone\u2019s attention, the roadways at campuses across the nation are experiencing safety challenges for pedestrians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are so proud of our campus community and their commitment to the \u2018Look Up\u2019 campaign.\u00a0 As our campus continues to grow, we are naturally seeing an increase in the number of pedestrians and vehicles on our streets and crosswalks,\u201d said SAU President Dr. Trey Berry. \u201cThis campaign reflects our campus commitment to trying to keep our students, faculty and staff safe at all times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/03\/SAU-Look-Up-Day-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6026\" src=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/03\/SAU-Look-Up-Day-3-300x147.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"147\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/03\/SAU-Look-Up-Day-3-300x147.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/03\/SAU-Look-Up-Day-3-768x376.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/03\/SAU-Look-Up-Day-3-1024x501.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/03\/SAU-Look-Up-Day-3.jpg 1100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Victor Moore, member of the Staff Senate and safety committee, was one of the volunteers handing out cards with pedestrian safety tips and suckers to those crossing SAU\u2019s roadways. He was stationed in front of Overstreet Hall at a crosswalk caught between two curves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe main thing I noticed was that it seems people speed up coming from both directions in the curves before the crosswalk,\u201d said Moore. \u201cI never realized how dangerous that particular crosswalk was before this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taylor believes it will take everyone being aware of the danger to keep everyone safe. \u201cWe are dedicated to doing everything we can to raise awareness of the need to use crosswalks and stay off cell phones while crossing the street,\u201d she said. \u201cThere is also a need for drivers to observe the speed limit in all areas of campus and to be aware that pedestrians could be attempting to cross the street at many different locations around the campus\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pranit Hamal, a senior who volunteered to be a part of the safety committee and work the busy crosswalk in front of the Reynolds Center during \u201cLook Up Day,\u201d echoed Taylor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/03\/SAU-Look-Up-Day-2.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6025\" src=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/03\/SAU-Look-Up-Day-2-216x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"216\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/03\/SAU-Look-Up-Day-2-216x300.jpg 216w, https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/03\/SAU-Look-Up-Day-2.jpg 611w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/><\/a>\u201cDrivers and pedestrians alike share the responsibility of keeping themselves and others safe on the road. We have been taught from childhood to look left, right and forward before we cross. However, the use of technologies while walking has prevented us from thinking of the basics.
