In the end, at least 13 of the \u201cSig Pi\u2019s\u201d had their heads shaved down to the scalp in the SAU Reynolds Center Wednesday, March 9.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is so awesome! I can\u2019t believe they raised this much. We are sad we can\u2019t be there, but we are in Philadelphia at a doctor appointment for Kaylynn,\u201d said her mother, Anne Sands, who is assistant director of financial aid at SAU and an SAU alum.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Last summer Sands was given the news that her daughter was diagnosed with ganglioneuroblastoma, a cancer which develops in the nerve tissue. Several fundraising efforts have been held by various groups and individuals on campus. Sands and her family have been blo<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/Sigma-Pi-Head-Shaving_Joe-Weeks-shaves-Taylor-Harvey.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5301 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/Sigma-Pi-Head-Shaving_Joe-Weeks-shaves-Taylor-Harvey-207x300.jpg\" alt=\"Sigma Pi Head Shaving_Joe Weeks shaves Taylor Harvey\" width=\"207\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/Sigma-Pi-Head-Shaving_Joe-Weeks-shaves-Taylor-Harvey-207x300.jpg 207w, https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/Sigma-Pi-Head-Shaving_Joe-Weeks-shaves-Taylor-Harvey-707x1024.jpg 707w, https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/Sigma-Pi-Head-Shaving_Joe-Weeks-shaves-Taylor-Harvey.jpg 735w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nwn away by the support from the community, and especially the students.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylynn recently had surgery at the Children\u2019s Hospital of Philadelphia, which removed about 90% of the tumor. Sands said her daughter is now declared a \u201ccancer survivor.\u201d She will have blood work done once a month and scans every three months for the next year, at which point the doctors will reevaluate Kaylynn\u2019s situation.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler Gentry, the philanthropy chair of Sigma Pi, said that Kaylynn\u2019s father, John Sands, is fraternity alum and they were all anxious to give \u201ca little brotherly help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zach Greenhaw, of Sigma Pi who helped head up the project, said, \u201cThese frat\u2019 guys don\u2019t even know John personally, but they came together to help.\u201d John Sands graduated from SAU in 1999.<\/p>\n<p>Sigma Pi members who went under the shaver included Obidigbo Nzeribe, Dillan Bever, Luke Callahan, Tyler Gentry, Noah Higdon, Zack Bever, Taylor Harvey, Judson Rateliff, Zach Greenhaw, Dalton Jones, Caleb Glann, Taylor Murphy, and Dylan Burge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/Sigma-Pi-Head-Shaving.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5302 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/Sigma-Pi-Head-Shaving-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"Sigma Pi Head Shaving\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/Sigma-Pi-Head-Shaving-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/Sigma-Pi-Head-Shaving-768x478.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/Sigma-Pi-Head-Shaving-1024x638.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/Sigma-Pi-Head-Shaving-320x200.jpg 320w, https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/Sigma-Pi-Head-Shaving.jpg 1260w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Joe Weeks of the College Barber Shop not only donated $20 toward the cause, but also his time in shaving the students\u2019 heads.<\/p>\n<p>Sands tried to list the other groups who have raised money or shown support: Phi Mu (which she is an alum), Alpha Sigma Alpha, Harrod Hall, SAU cheerleaders, Tutoring Center, Rankin College of Business, football defensive backs, volleyball, softball, Sigma Gamma Rho, men\u2019s basketball, and The Bray.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Sigma Pi fraternity at Southern Arkansas University recently raised more than $1,700 with their hair on the line in the latest act of support by the Mulerider family to benefit Kaylynn Sands, 2, for her medical treatments in her fight against cancer.
