The ceremony is slated for 1:30 p.m. on Monday, April 27, at the track.

Designed by WER architects, this project will result in a complete overhaul of the existing track and field complex. The scope includes all-new infrastructure, track and event surfaces, seating for 500 spectators, and stadium-style lighting. New fencing and landscaping will polish off the improvements which are estimated at $1 million.

The physical upgrades are part of a revitalization of the Mulerider men’s and women’s track and field programs that returned to campus this year after a three-year hiatus. Prior to their temporary discontinuation, the SAU track teams enjoyed great success within the sport. As members of the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference, the SAU men’s and women’s track teams brought home a combined 12 conference championships between 1967 and 1995.

“Track has a storied history here at Southern Arkansas University, and we’re excited to see the successes this season,” said SAU President Dr. David Rankin. “But the old facilities must be replaced. When this project is completed, I really think we will have the nicest NCAA Division II track and field complex in the state.”

The renovated track and field facility will once again allow SAU to host sanctioned track meets, something that has been impossible for several years due to the age and condition of the track surface. Major construction on the project is not slated to begin until later this summer and will take about six months to complete.

Opportunities for private investment in this project are still available through the “Setting the Pace for the Future” campaign.
