Beginning in the fall of 2006, students will have an opportunity to live in the same residence hall with people who have the same interests as them.<\/p>\n
\u201cResidential Interest Groups are living and learning options for all students living in the residence halls,\u201d said Sandra Smith. \u201cGroups will live together on a specific floor based on their interests. No matter what your interests are, there is a Residential Interest Group for you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Prospective and current students can apply online now and choose which group they want to live with.<\/p>\n
The communities also foster a living and learning environment through campus involvement, academic support, and peer and professional staff members committed to helping students succeed during their college career.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe communities are based on interests, not majors,\u201d said Smith. \u201cWe want to give students an opportunity to develop friendships with those who have similar interests as them.\u201d<\/p>\n
There are 14 Residential Interest Groups for students to choose from. The interest groups include Agriculture, Best in Business, Greek, Education, Freshmen Year Experience, Health and Wellness, Honors College, Mule.org, Nursing, Performing Arts, Pre-professional, Residential College, Sophomore Year Experience, and Computer Science.<\/p>\n
\u201cDuring the first semester, we want to provide our students with as many choices as possible,\u201d said Smith. \u201cWe will reevaluate each of the interest groups at the end of the year to see which ones are being utilized the most.\u201d<\/p>\n
Smith is optimistic that the interest groups will be successful.<\/p>\n
\u201cA lot of universities outside of Arkansas have these programs and they seem to be working very well,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
