The start of the new academic year is the perfect time to Resolve to be Ready and Southern Arkansas University is proud to promote emergency preparedness for 2012. To help employees and members of the university community be safe and better prepared, the Southern Arkansas University Police Department and the Office of Student Life are hosting several emergency preparedness training courses and events.

Sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Ready Campaign, Resolve to be Ready is a nationwide effort designed to increase awareness as well as encourage individuals, families, businesses and communities to take action and prepare for emergencies in the coming year.

The Ready Campaign would like to encourage as many as possible to make an emergency preparedness resolution. It can be done in four important steps:

* Be informed. Know the hazards and risks in your area. “Being prepared for an emergency of any magnitude is a very important part of keeping yourself and your community safe,” said SAU Police Chief Eric Plummer. “We hope that our community members will join us in these important training programs and take the pledge to prepare during September – National Preparedness Month.”

He encourages everyone to get involved in keeping the community safe.

Emergencies can range from inconvenience to devastation, but you can resolve not to be a victim of an emergency or disaster and take steps to minimize the impact on you, your family and your businesses.

More information is available at Ready.gov. The Website includes free information, checklists and guidelines about how to be informed, develop a family emergency plan, build an emergency kit, and get involved.

Please see the attached calendar for event details. Seating is limited. If you would like to attend a specific course, please send your RSVP to Brad Stout at bradstout@saumag.edu prior to the day of the event.

Training schedule:

Incident Command System (ICS) 100 Self Defense: Wed., Sept. 5 & 12 from 3 p.m. – 4 p.m. in MAC 210

ICS 100 Part 2: Thurs., Sept. 6 & 13 from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. in Reynolds 207

ICS 200 Part 1: Tues., Sept. 18 & 13 from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. in Reynolds 207

Self Defense: Wed., Sept. 19 & 26 from 3 p.m. – 4 p.m. in MAC 210 Work Place Violence: Mon.
