Dr. David Ashby, professor of economics and finance, was named the 2012 Honor Professor during the annual Southern Arkansas University Faculty Honors Banquet recently. Other awards were given to faculty members for teaching and service.<\/p>\n
Ashby graduated from Southern Arkansas University in 1977 with a bachelor\u2019s degree in accounting. He completed his master\u2019s in business administration degree at Ole Miss in 1978 and followed with a doctorate in business administration in finance from Louisiana Tech University.<\/p>\n
For years, Ashby worked as an accountant by day and served as an adjunct professor teaching mostly accounting classes at night at the University of the Ozarks in Fort Smith.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne year, the finance professor didn\u2019t show up and I got to teach the basic financial management course,\u201d he said. \u201cAfter teaching that course, I knew what I wanted to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
His favorite part of teaching is seeing the moment of understanding in his students.<\/p>\n
\u201cSeeing somebody finally \u2018get it\u2019 \u2013 whether that means getting a particular concept in the narrow sense, or \u2018getting\u2019 why a career as a financial planner could improve a lot of lives and would be a great way to spend your working years,\u201d said Ashby. \u201cI also get to work with a fabulous group of faculty, who truly care about students and their success.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDr. Ashby is an outstanding professor and has distinguished himself through his teaching, scholarship, and leadership of the CFP program both here in Arkansas and nationally,\u201d said SAU President Dr. David Rankin. \u201cIn addition, he has put his expertise to work by founding the very successful investment advisory firm Mustard Seed Financial, Inc.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ashby has a motto that he frequently shares with his students: \u201cTo whom much is given, much is required. Use the talents you have been given wisely.\u201d<\/p>\n
Talk to former students and it would be a sure bet that you wouldn\u2019t find one with negative things to say.\u00a0 He is endeared by those who know him.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it is because he is always willing to help students and faculty alike with any problem, and I think that has won him a whole host of friends both here at the University and beyond,\u201d said Rankin.\u00a0\u201cHe is easily one of the most outstanding finance professors anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n
Other award recipients at the banquet included Dr. Jennifer Logan, assistant professor of economics; Rusty Hayes, instructor of agriculture and rodeo coach; Dr. David DeSeguirant, associate professor of music; and Dr. Martine Boumtje, associate professor of French.<\/p>\n
Logan was honored as the recipient of the Research Award. She has published four peer-reviewed journal articles in the past four years and has recently published a textbook titled \u201cPrinciples of Macroeconomics: A Simple Manual to the Not-so-dismal Science.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hayes was honored as the recipient of the Auburn Smith Service Award.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe nomination letters describe students who gain confidence, protection, and guidance while at SAU thanks to this professor,\u201d said Dr. Shannin Schroeder when presenting the award to Hayes. \u201cThey note with pride that academic improvement is on this person\u2019s radar and a consistent goal for students. They describe physically and emotionally trying times for their program \u2013 and how they watched firsthand as a role model, who\u2019d been more a parent than a coach at time, channeled that frustration and their fears into determination to right a terrible wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n
DeSerguirant was honored with the Robert Walz Teaching Award. In presenting the award, Dr. Terrye Stinson said DeSerguirant had \u201cused everything in his considerable repertoire of experience for the betterment of his program.\u201d Under his direction, the program has grown in enrollment, increased the number of scholarships, and has made possible new opportunities for his students. Stinson said that DeSerguirant\u2019s students say that his in-class conduct is among the best they have experienced.<\/p>\n
Boumtje was awarded the Calvin Wetzig Teaching Award. The award was presented by Dr. Abdel Bachri who noted that Boumtje teaching a very difficult subject \u2013 French \u2013 but she receives some of the highest student evaluations. \u201cLearning a foreign language is hard, but you couldn\u2019t have picked a better person to teach it,\u201d wrote one student.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
