The hard work of two professors from the College of Science and Technology at Southern Arkansas University, Magnolia, has paid off with the recent opening of the Center for Teaching Excellence in Math and Science.<\/p>\n
\u201cDr. Debe Kincaid and Tim Daniels donated a lot of time and effort to seeing this project get off the ground,\u201d said Dr. Joe Winstead, director of the Center and dean of the College of Science and Technology. \u201cThey deserve a lot of credit for making the Center a reality.\u201d<\/p>\n
The purpose of the Center is to promote high quality math and science instruction for all students.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is important that teachers receive the training necessary not only to assist them with ongoing programs for their classrooms, but also to become knowledegable of their qualifications and assure their ongoing training,\u201d said Winstead. \u201cThe Center strives to bring quality training and materials to classroom teachers.\u201d<\/p>\n
The goals of the Center are to support high quality mathematics and science education in the state; provide professional development opportunities for classroom teachers and administrators; serve as a resource for math, science, and technology materials; assist schools in curriculum, instruction, assessment improvements, and reform; and foster partnerships with school districts.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnyone interested in building a presence for math and science in his or her school should contact the Center,\u201d said Winstead. \u201cThe Center can provide comprehensive information to enhance math and science education and life-long learning.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lynne Roberts Nielsen will serve as the secondary mathematics instructional specialist and Lisa Morris Anderson is the elementary science specialist. Other faculty associates include Tim Daniels, associate professor of biology; Dr. Leo Carson Davis, professor of geology and geography; Dr. Debe Kincaid, associate professor of mathematics; and Dr. Rudy Eichenberger, professor of physics and chair of the Department of Physical Sciences and Technology.<\/p>\n
