Entry forms and information regarding History Day 2006 hosted by the Department of History, Geography, and Political Science at Southern Arkansas University, Magnolia, are now available for students interested in participating in the annual festival.<\/p>\n
\u201cHistory Day is a contest in which area students create historical papers, dramas, readings, or exhibits that compete for regional, state, and national prizes,\u201d said Dr. Charles S. Young, History Day coordinator. \u201cWinners at the national level receive thousands of dollars in prizes and scholarships.\u201d
\nStudents will display their exhibits and perform their demonstrations on Friday, March 3, at the Donald W. Reynolds Campus and Community Center located on the University campus. Winners receive $30 and their teachers will receive $50.<\/p>\n
\u201cTeachers, students, and their parents are also invited to the awards banquet held by the SAU Department of History, Geography, and Political Science,\u201d said Young.<\/p>\n
Participants will compete in two divisions. They are the junior division for grades six through eight and the senior division for grades nine through twelve. This year\u2019s theme is \u201cTaking a Stand in History: People, Ideas, Events.\u201d
\nStudents will compete in six different categories. They can write a historical paper of 1,500 to 2,500 words; have an individual exhibit of a display, model, poster, chart, etc., of an historical subject; a group exhibit that includes up to five students; an individual performance of a song, dramatic reading, lecture, demonstration, puppet show, etc., that is not to exceed 10 minutes; a group performance that includes up to five participants; or a documentary, a group or individual video, audio, or computer graphic presentation.<\/p>\n
All information, including essays and\/or process sheets, along with the names of the entries, authors, and contact information for the teacher, should be mailed by Friday, Feb. 17.<\/p>\n
