MAGNOLIA \u2014 The Department of Music at Southern Arkansas University will host a guest recital featuring \u201cDuo Montagnard\u201d at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 12, in Oliver Recital Hall.<\/p>\n
Duo Montagnard features Dr. Matthew Slotkin on guitar and Dr. Joseph Murphy on saxophone. The pair joined together in 2002 and has performed over 130 concerts in 25 states, Canada, Slovenia, the United Kingdom, Greece, Thailand, New Zealand, and Australia.<\/p>\n
Murphy has been the saxophone professor at Mansfield University in Mansfield, Pa., since 1987. He has also served as director of bands, department chair, and has taught a variety of courses. He holds the bachelor of music education degree from Bowling Green State University in Ohio and the master\u2019s and doctorate degrees from Northwestern University. A 1985-86 Fulbright Award winner, he has performed in 13 countries and has been recorded on Erol (France), Mark, and Opus One labels.<\/p>\n
Slotkin is an acclaimed performer, teacher and scholar and has appeared in leading venues throughout North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. He has achieved success in solo performance, chamber music and as a soloist with orchestra. American Record Guide praised him on his Centaur Records release, \u201cTwentieth Century Music for Guitar,\u201d for his \u201cmusical sensitivity and technical control\u201d and for giving \u201cstrong readings of this appealing music.\u201d Centaur Records released his newest recording, \u201cDances, Songs, Inventions,\u201d in February 2010. He is currently the director of the guitar programs at Mansfield University in Mansfield, Pa. He received the doctor of musical arts, master of music, and bachelor of music degrees from the Eastman School of Music.<\/p>\n
