{"id":143,"date":"2005-10-19T14:23:29","date_gmt":"2005-10-19T19:23:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.southernarkansasuniversity.info\/2005\/10\/academics\/education\/dr-guevara-to-lead-education-renewal-zone-initiative\/143\/"},"modified":"2009-11-04T13:18:50","modified_gmt":"2009-11-04T18:18:50","slug":"dr-guevara-to-lead-education-renewal-zone-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/news\/2005\/dr-guevara-to-lead-education-renewal-zone-initiative\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Guevara to lead Education Renewal Zone initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Universities and colleges from across the state were invited to submit proposals on how higher education can take a more active leadership role in grades K-12 by the 84th general assembly.<\/p>\n<p>Southern Arkansas University, Magnolia, submitted a proposal and received one of nine bloc grants to begin the Southwest \u2013 B Education Renewal Zone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very proud SAU stepped up to the plate,\u201d said Dr. Roger Guevara, director of the Education Renewal Zone and assistant professor of curriculum and instruction in the College of Education. \u201cNot all state universities applied to take on such an ambitious agenda. It is commendable that SAU wants to make a difference in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ERZ will focus on academic, fiscal, and facilities. Their purpose is to improve strategies for public school performance and student academic achievement; collaborate among the state\u2019s smaller schools and districts to achieve economies of scale; concentrate and coordinate resources; and effectively use distance learning technologies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can help school districts in their overall school performance,\u201d said Guevara.
