""Volunteer Services recently launched a new SAU Recycling Trailer program on campus under the direction of Kathy Gean. This exciting addition to campus sustainability was made possible through a grant funded by the Southwest Arkansas Planning and Development District Inc.

Volunteer Services has had a track record of improving sustainability efforts across campus led by Katie Tejada. They have worked with the SOAR Sustainability Conference Board, managed recycling bins in residence halls, posted informational fliers on recycling around campus, tabled at SAU volunteer fairs to raise awareness, and tracked collected recyclables.""

For example, from spring 2023 through spring 2024, SAU collected 3,350 pounds of cardboard, plastics and aluminum, proving that the campus community was ready to recycle on a larger scale.

“I was excited and grateful,” said Isabella Bernard, former student worker for Volunteer Services and author of the grant. “This grant directly helps our university improve sustainability efforts and supports Abilities Unlimited. It strengthened my confidence in working towards a greener campus.” Bernard is from Sarepta, LA, and graduated from SAU in 2024 with a BS in psychology.

The custom design for the trailer was provided by L.C. Manufacturing, which is based in Lafayette County.

The trailer is located on the northeast corner of the Reynolds Center parking lot, with easy access from both the parking lot and sidewalk. Through SAU’s ongoing partnership with Abilities Unlimited, AmeriCorps Saddle Up and Serve, and AmeriCorps VISTA, the trailer will be serviced regularly, and all recyclable materials will help support this impactful local nonprofit.

""Permitted items include plastic, aluminum, cardboard, and paper.

Volunteer Services expressed gratitude for the support of the Dr. Donna Allen, vice president for student affairs and Brad Stout, assistant dean for student affairs facilities.
