On November 4th, two Spanish Education students, Ms. Estrella Moya and Mr. Chinedu Okeke, together with Spanish professor Dr. Juping Wang, attended the Arkansas Spanish Teacher Symposium. The event was organized by University of Arkansas at Fort Smith and took place on their campus. Spanish teachers from local schools and Spanish Education students from various Arkansas universities attended the symposium. During the day-long event, the participants had the opportunity to listen to the 2017 Arkansas Teacher of the Year, Ms. Courtney Cochran’s keynote address: “Beyond the Classroom: Activism and Advocacy for Every Child”, and to participate in various teaching workshops on diverse topics such as using Pinterest in the Second Language classroom, assessment techniques, and creative ways to use music and art to teacher language and culture. The day ended perfectly with a concert of Latin American Music by the Dutch singer and flutist, Ms. Francine Van Dam.
Ms. Estrella Moya is a junior from Texarkana. Mr. Chinedu Okeke is a freshman from Nigeria. Both of them acknowledged the fun and the inspiration they derived from the activities at the symposium. The trip was co-funded by School of Education, School of Liberal and Performing Arts, and the Honors College.
