{"id":527,"date":"2012-07-24T09:49:00","date_gmt":"2012-07-24T14:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/mac\/?page_id=527"},"modified":"2012-07-24T11:10:16","modified_gmt":"2012-07-24T16:10:16","slug":"badminton-rules","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/mac\/intramurals\/badminton-rules\/","title":{"rendered":"Badminton Rules"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Badminton is a racquet sport played by either two opposing players (singles) or two opposing pairs (doubles), who take positions on opposite halves of a rectangular court that is divided by a net. Players score points by striking a shuttlecock with their racquet so that it passes over the net and lands in their opponents\u2019 half of the court. A rally ends once the shuttlecock has struck the ground, and each side may only strike the shuttlecock once before it passes over the net.<\/p>\n<h2>General Rules<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>A shuttle landing on the line is good.<\/li>\n<li>A shuttle hitting the net is good and play continues (including on the serve) if all other aspects of the play is legal.<\/li>\n<li>All players must be INSIDE the lines in their respective service courts at the point of contact during the serve.<\/li>\n<li>A \u201clet\u201d is a situation requiring a replay.<\/li>\n<li>When the leading team\u2019s score reaches 11 points, players get a 60 second break.<\/li>\n<li>A 2 minute interval is allowed after each game.<\/li>\n<li>In the third game, players change ends when the leading team\u2019s score reaches 11 points.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>\u00a0Beginning Play<\/h2>\n<p>Before play, opposite teams shall toss, and the side winning the toss shall have the option of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Serving first or receiving serve<\/li>\n<li>Choosing which side of the court to start on<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The side losing the toss has the choice of the remaining alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>Toss is decided by one of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Coin flip<\/li>\n<li>Volley<\/li>\n<li>Spin of racquet<\/li>\n<li>Drop of the bird (direction pointing)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The team that wins the game will serve first in the next game.<\/p>\n<h2>Lets<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Server serves before the receiver is ready<\/li>\n<li>Shuttle breaks during play<\/li>\n<li>Shuttle gets caught on top of the net or in the net after having gone over (except on the serve)<\/li>\n<li>A \u201clet\u201d or replay will be given for any \u201caccidental hindrances\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Double fault (one on each team) equals a let<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>\u00a0Scoring<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Games are played to 21 points<\/li>\n<li>A match consists of the best of 3 games<\/li>\n<li>Rally scoring is used (a point is scored on every serve)<\/li>\n<li>If the receiving team wins the rally it scores a point and will serve the next point<\/li>\n<li>At 20 all, the side which gains a 2 point lead first, wins the game<\/li>\n<li>At 29 all, the side scoring the 30<sup>th<\/sup> point, wins the game<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>\u00a0Singles Play<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Singles serving court and playing court are both long and narrow<\/li>\n<li>Serve from the right side when the server\u2019s score is \u201ceven\u201d and from the left side when their score is \u201codd\u201d<\/li>\n<li>All serves must be diagonal<\/li>\n<li>Both players change service courts after a point is scored<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Doubles Play<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Doubles serving court is short and wide<\/li>\n<li>Doubles playing court changes to long and wide following the serve<\/li>\n<li>Each time the serving court scores a point, the same server serves the next serve from the other side of the court<\/li>\n<li>No player ever receives two consecutive serves<\/li>\n<li>The serving team changes service courts only after scoring a point<\/li>\n<li>A receiving team never changes courts<\/li>\n<li>When the receiving team wins the rally their server is determined by whether their score is \u201ceven\u201d (right side serves) or \u201codd\u201d (left side serves)<\/li>\n<li>Only the player served to may receive the service<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Badminton is a racquet sport played by either two opposing players (singles) or two opposing pairs (doubles), who take positions on opposite halves of a rectangular court that is divided by a net.
