{"id":472,"date":"2009-07-06T12:09:41","date_gmt":"2009-07-06T17:09:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/library\/?page_id=472"},"modified":"2026-03-17T14:54:40","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T19:54:40","slug":"how-to-find-plays-and-monologues","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/library\/onlineresources\/faqs\/how-to-find-plays-and-monologues\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Find Plays and Monologues"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Locating Plays<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Search the<a href=\"http:\/\/saul.sirsi.net\/uhtbin\/cgisirsi\/x\/x\/0\/49\/\"> library catalog<\/a>\u00a0 (link on right of the page) by author or by the title of the play.\u00a0 Some plays are published separately and will be found as an individual title, e.g., <em>Twelfth Night<\/em> or <em>Antigone<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0 Others are published in collections or anthologies (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">anthology<\/span> \u2013 a book or other collection of selected writings by various authors, usually in the same literary form, of the same period, or on the same subject).<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0Search by <strong>AUTHOR<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A catalog search by <strong>AUTHOR<\/strong> will locate works by that author.\u00a0 Watch particularly for \u201cWorks,\u201d \u201cComplete Works,\u201d \u201cComplete Plays,\u201d \u201cCollected Works,\u201d \u201cCollected Plays,\u201d \u201cSelected Works,\u201d and \u201cSelected Plays\u201d as titles.<\/p>\n<p>Type the author\u2019s name in the blank next to AUTHOR.<\/p>\n<p>Example:<\/p>\n<p>Williams, Tennessee (or you can type Tennessee Williams)<\/p>\n<p>Then, click on SEARCH.<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0Search by <strong>TITLE<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A catalog search by <strong>TITLE <\/strong>should tell you whether the library has a copy of a play that was published separately.<\/p>\n<p>Type the title of the play next to TITLE.<\/p>\n<p>Example:<\/p>\n<p>The Tempest<\/p>\n<p>Then, click on SEARCH.<\/p>\n<p>You will need to use an index (See below.) to find plays in collections\/anthologies, if your author or title search above was not productive.\u00a0\u00a0 Some plays are published in periodicals (magazines or journals) and must also be located with an index.\u00a0 Having found in an index an anthology or a periodical in which your play appears, you must return to the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/library\/\">library page\u00a0<\/a> to see if the library has that anthology or periodical.<\/p>\n<h1>Play Indexes<\/h1>\n<p>The following indexes are located in the <strong>Reference Collection (<\/strong>2<sup>nd<\/sup> floor) in Magale Library.\u00a0 Call numbers are provided.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Play Index<\/strong>.\u00a0 New York:\u00a0 H.W. Wilson Company, 1949-<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Z5781 .P53<\/p>\n<p>This indexes plays published from 1949 to 2007. Updates are done every four years.\u00a0 Users can search by author, title, subject, style, setting, cast, and production requirements.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Montgomery, Denise L.\u00a0 <strong>Ottemiller\u2019s Index to Plays in Collections<\/strong>. 8<sup>th<\/sup> ed., rev. and enl. Lanham, MD:\u00a0 Scarecrow Press, 2011.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Z5781 .O8 2011<\/p>\n<p>This indexes, by author and title, plays appearing in collections published throughout the English-speaking world from 1900 through 2000. Plays indexed are full-length, with the exception of the Best Plays series, which include excerpts and synopses only.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Samples, Gordon.\u00a0 <strong>The Drama Scholars\u2019 Index to Plays and Filmscripts<\/strong>.\u00a0 Metuchen, NJ: Scarecrow Press, 1974.\u00a0 3 volumes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Z5781 .S17<\/p>\n<p>Plays are indexed from selected anthologies, series, and periodicals.\u00a0 Also included are unusual plays and out-of-the ordinary versions in their original languages or in translations. Volume 3 takes the indexing through the end of 1983.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Inter-Play:\u00a0 an On-Line Index to Plays in Collections, Anthologies, and Periodicals<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/library.pdx.edu\/interplay\/\">Inter-Play<\/a> is a web site providing access to the locations of printed plays in collections, anthologies, and periodicals published since the late 19<sup>th<\/sup> century.\u00a0 Most listed here are not indexed in the standard play indexes above.\u00a0 You may search <em>Inter-Play<\/em> by author or title or source.\u00a0 Be aware that <em>Inter-Play<\/em> is based upon the collection at Portland State University.\u00a0 Magale Library may or may not have the sources given, and the call numbers may or may not be the same.\u00a0 You must check <a href=\"http:\/\/saul.sirsi.net\/uhtbin\/cgisirsi\/x\/x\/0\/49\/\">the Magale Library catalog<\/a>\u00a0 or list of full-text journals(by going to library web page, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/library\/onlineresources\/\">Electronic\u00a0Resources<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/library\/onlineresources\/ejournals\/\">E-journal by Title<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/saumag.idm.oclc.org\/login?url=http:\/\/search.ebscohost.com\/login.aspx?authtype=ip,uid&amp;profile=pfi\">A to Z List<\/a>, and then entering the journal name) to see if we have the collection, anthology or periodical you found in <em>Inter-Play<\/em> and to check for the call number, if relevant.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Locating Monologues<\/h2>\n<p>To browse the shelf on the third floor(Main Collection)of Magale Library, look under <strong>PN 2080<\/strong> because most books of monologues and scenes are shelved under this number; a secondary location is <strong>PN 4305 .M6<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>To locate anthologies of monologues, search by <strong>SUBJECT<\/strong> in the Magale Library Catalog.
