Mrs. Burns is an avid historian who specializes in the storytelling of oral histories of the Magnolia community. Her talk tells many stories of Magnolia\u2019s historic town square, including the stores and their owners who influenced the development of a now thriving community. Please look for our invitations to this event in April. We are scheduled to host Robbie Robinson from the Texarkana Beekeepers Association to share his experiences of working with bees in the region. Mr. Robinson will describe many aspects of beekeeping, including its importance in our ecosystem. We will send invitations for this event in April and hope you will plan to attend, but also bring a friend! Also, if you know of someone interested in making a difference in SAU students&#8217; lives, please let us know. We would like to extend our invitation to welcome potential new Magale Library Friends. SAHM is a relatively new and unique museum for South Arkansas that opened in May of 2022 and is housed in the historical Dr. H. A. Longino House located on the corner of Main and Vine Streets.\u00a0 The Museum\u2019s \u201cmission is to illustrate our past, which we believe gives meaning to our present and lights the path to our future. Dr. Watson\u2019s research focuses on the breeding and movement behaviors of birds, with a particular focus on raptorial species, such as hawks, falcons, and owls. She is interested in avian community dynamics, conservation, and climate change. Thanks to a father who moved her with stories, she fell in love with the sound and feel of words \u2013 the magic of stringing them together into stories. <strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>The author and publisher wears her southern-ness on her sleeve and creates stories about hers and other southerners\u2019 miraculous and banal lives through short stories, memoir, autobiography, biography and fiction. \u00a0Janis\u2019s path has taken her many places, including her role as publisher of the AR State Press founded by civil rights legend Daisy Gatson Bates, and as Personal Diarist to America\u2019s 42<sup>nd<\/sup> President William J. Clinton. A more recent role that brings enormous joy and passion is founder and president of the Celebrate! Maya Project, a nonprofit she and a handful of women created after the death of the iconic Maya Angelou in 2014. What started out as a celebration of Maya Angelou\u2019s life and legacy, has magically transformed into a bridge for young people seeking to find their own voices. Janis says, \u201cWe are a forum for young people to learn their own history and create their own stories, and in the process, discover their own voices through writing workshops, literary competitions, and public forums. We\u2019re impacting children\u2019s lives, and that is what Maya would expect of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse;width: 100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 50%\" colspan=\"2\">\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\"><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Southern Arkansas University<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Magale Library<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Celebrates Opening of the<br \/>\nNational Museum of African American<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>History and Culture With<br \/>\nSmithsonian Poster Exhibition<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>The Smithsonian Institution opened its newest museum, the National Museum of African American History and Culture Sept. 24, 2016. The celebration continues and reaches beyond Washington, D.C., to Magnolia as Southern Arkansas University Magale Library presents \u201cA Place for All People: Introducing the National Museum of African American History and Culture.\u201d The commemorative poster exhibition will be on view Spring Semester 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) in collaboration with the National Museum of African American History and Culture, \u201cA Place for All People\u201d highlights key artifacts that tell the rich and diverse story of the African American experience. From the child-size shackles of a slave and the clothing worn by Carolotta Walls on her first day at Little Rock Central High School to Chuck Berry\u2019s Gibson guitar, \u201cMaybellene,\u201d and the track shoes worn by Olympian Carl Lewis, the exhibition presents a living history that reflects challenge, triumph, faith and hope.<\/p>\n<p>The poster exhibition and related public programs are an opportunity for Southern Arkansas University Magale Library to showcase its work in sharing the many stories of African American and African diaspora people and their contributions to the local community and the American story.<\/p>\n<p>The journey to establish this museum began a century ago with a call for a national memorial to honor the contributions of African American Civil War veterans. After decades of efforts by private citizens, organizations and members of Congress, federal legislation was passed in 2003 to create the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Since then, thousands of artifacts have been collected to fill the inspiring new building that has risen on the National Mall. Through its exhibitions and programs, the museum provides a shared lens to view the nation\u2019s history and the possibility for hope and healing. It is a place where all can gather to remember, reflect and embrace America\u2019s story: a place for all people.
