All individuals involved with the care and use of animals in research and educational activities at SAU are responsible for ensuring the health and well-being of the animals.<\/p>\n<p>The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is responsible for overseeing the provisions for the care and well-being of vertebrate animals used for research and educational purposes at the University. The IACUC serves the public by ensuring compliance with all legal and ethical standards regarding the use of vertebrate animals in research and educational activities at SAU.<\/p>\n<p>Certain categories of animals are exempt from IACUC oversight:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>invertebrate animals (i.e. eggs, insects, crustaceans, etc.) used in research<\/li>\n<li>service animals<\/li>\n<li>animals under the control of a law enforcement officer acting in the course of his or her duties<\/li>\n<li>animals used in agricultural research, where the goal of that research is solely for animal production and does not have biomedical applications<\/li>\n<li>animals kept in residence halls as approved by the SAU Department of Housing<\/li>\n<li>animals maintained on the SAU Farm or used in SAU Rodeo activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>2023-2024 IACUC Committee<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Dr. Jeremy Chamberlain, Chair<\/li>\n<li>Dr. James Hyde, Biology Representative<\/li>\n<li>Dr. Oscar Tejeda, Agriculture Representative<\/li>\n<li>Ms. Mercedes Ray, University Representative<\/li>\n<li>Dr. Steven Alexander, Veterinarian<\/li>\n<li>Ms. Holli Howard, Community Representative<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SAU recognizes the importance of animals in research and educational activities and the scientific and ethical responsibility for their humane care and use.
