Southern Arkansas University (SAU) invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Education and Human Performance. The selected candidate will begin duties on July 1, 2022. SAU is a public regional institution with a total enrollment of approximately 4,400 undergraduate and graduate students and over 350 faculty and staff. Our campus is located in Magnolia, a city of 11,000 in rural southwest Arkansas, approximately 50 miles east of Texarkana and 140 miles southwest of Little Rock. The College of Education and Human Performance consists of three academic departments: Counseling and Professional Studies; Human Performance and Sport Sciences; and Teacher Education. The College also houses the SAU branch of the Education Renewal Zone. The College offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and one doctoral degree. The Department of Teacher Education’s Initial Licensure Program was recently granted full reaccreditation by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), with the next review to take place prior to Fall 2025. The Department of Human Performance and Sport Sciences’ MS program in Kinesiology/Coaching received accreditation from the National Committee for Accreditation of Coaching Excellence (NCACE) in 2017.

Duties: Provide visionary administrative and academic leadership; promote excellence in teaching, service, scholarship, advising and assessment; undertake creative initiatives for recruitment and retention; oversee curriculum development; identify local and global opportunities for the College and University; develop and execute effective strategic plans; foster collaborations and team-building; expand external relations and community outreach; participate in fund raising and grant writing; promote faculty and student research; prepare and manage the College budget; support and participate in accreditation processes; teach one class per year, and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Earned doctorate in a field related to one of the departments of the College; a record of teaching, scholarship, and service consistent with appointment at the rank of associate or full professor; three years of administrative experience as dean, associate dean, department chair, or in some other related capacity; effective oral and written communication skills; scholarly accomplishments, such as publications in refereed journals, research awards, and/or success in securing external funding. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in faculty/staff development; a keen understanding of P-12/post-secondary education; working knowledge of a state department of education; and experience with the assessment and accreditation processes.
