{"id":34,"date":"2012-04-19T11:41:38","date_gmt":"2012-04-19T17:41:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/facultysenate\/?p=34"},"modified":"2013-12-02T16:47:45","modified_gmt":"2013-12-02T22:47:45","slug":"faulty-senate-minutes-april-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/faculty-staff\/2012\/04\/19\/faulty-senate-minutes-april-2012\/","title":{"rendered":"April 2012  Minutes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Faculty Senate Meeting<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Attendance<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Faculty Senate met on Thursday, April 19, at 3:40 pm in Reynolds 205.\u00a0 Senators in attendance were Stacy Clanton, Jan Duke, Sam Riner, Pat Clanton, Karen Ferneding, Tim Schroeder, Shannin Schroeder, Denise Moseley, Pierre Boumtje, Scott White, Tim Daniels, Abdul Bachri, Hong Cheng, Vikram Bhadauria, Mary Armwood, Jennifer Logan.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Ex-officio:<\/span><\/strong><strong> \u00a0<\/strong>Amber Allen, Terrye Stinson, Trey Berry, David Crouse, Donna Allen, Roger Giles<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Visitors included:<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Linda Blake.\u00a0 <strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Call to Order:<\/span><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>Pres. S. Clanton called the meeting to order at 3:40 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Approval of Minutes <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Minutes from the March Faculty Senate meeting were approved electronically.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Special Orders of the Day\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Report from VPAA Search Committee:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Senator P. Boumtje reported that the search committee was still in the process of reviewing applications.\u00a0 Two applicants for the position, Dr. Terrye Stinson and Dr. Trey Berry, have been formally interviewed on April 16 and April 18.\u00a0 The search committee had scheduled a meeting for Monday, April 23 and would announce their decision sometime after that date.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Faculty Assembly:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Pres. Clanton requested that senators remind their constituents that the faculty Assembly is scheduled for 3:00 pm on Friday, April 20 in BUS #208.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>AQIP General Education Assessment Committee Learning Goals Report:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Senator T. Schroeder explained the responsibilities\/functions of this AQIP committee.\u00a0 He explained the need for a solid mission statement for the university as well as a way to condense the learning goals.\u00a0 Dr. Trey Berry and Dr. Terrye Stinson then discussed how the committee planned to address these concerns.\u00a0 They distributed a handout showing the suggested mission statement.\u00a0 This handout also showed the process in which education and university learning goals were condensed.\u00a0 Dr. Stinson explained that the reasoning behind these changes was to clearly communicate the mission of the university as well an effort to build a clear process to assess general education throughout all campus programs.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Unfinished Business<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Ad Hoc Academic Integrity Committee Report<\/em><\/p>\n<p>K. Ferneding reported the committee was currently working with Del Duke from the Magale Library to design instructional modules.\u00a0 The modules would be organized in the following order:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Introduction to academic dishonesty<\/li>\n<li>Plagiarism<\/li>\n<li>Cheating<\/li>\n<li>Fabrication<\/li>\n<li>Consequences<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pre and post tests are also being created for each module.\u00a0 On behalf of the committee, Senator Ferneding asked for feedback from any faculty interested in looking over what had been created thus far.\u00a0 The links to do so are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saumag.edu\/library\/AcademicIntegrity\/AcademicIntegrity.html\">http:\/\/www.saumag.edu\/library\/AcademicIntegrity\/AcademicIntegrity.html<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saumag.edu\/library\/AcadIntegModule1ALT\/AcadIntegModule1ALT.html\">http:\/\/www.saumag.edu\/library\/AcadIntegModule1ALT\/AcadIntegModule1ALT.html<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The committee also reported that SAU will receive a 1-semester trail for Turnitin.com.\u00a0 Turnitin reported has a faster turnaround as well as a much larger database than SafeAssign.<\/p>\n<p><em>Allusers Policy\/Report from Handbook Committee:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On behalf of the Faculty Handbook Committee, Chair P. Clanton reported the recommendation of the committee would be effective starting in the fall 2012 semester and will be discussed with the faculty at that time.\u00a0 With the help of the Technology Committee, an absence form is being constructed for students to submit to their instructors.\u00a0 \u00a0<strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Ethics Policy\/Recommendation from Handbook Committee:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Chair P. Clanton distributed a handout showing an expansion of the current ethics policy.\u00a0 This handout will be presented to the general assembly at the start of the fall 2012 semester, and will be voted on at that time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Reports of Committees \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Staff Senate\/Benevolence Fund:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Senator S. White reported that the Staff Senate is planning to initiate a benevolence fund to help SAU community members in need.\u00a0 Senators were encouraged to share this with their constituents and help to contribute to the fund if possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">New Business<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Blackboard Maintenance Schedule:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Pres. Clanton explained that many faculty have raised concerns regarding the Friday afternoon maintenance scheduling for Blackboard.\u00a0 Many faculty argue that assignments are due at this time and the regularly scheduled maintenance adversely affects their ability to conduct their classes.\u00a0 Mike Argo has responded to these concerns in a letter, explaining regular maintenance keeps the Blackboard system up and running the rest of the week and is therefore necessary to continue.\u00a0 Senator T. Schroeder moved to table this issue and revisit it in the fall semester.\u00a0 Senator B. Fincher seconded.\u00a0 The motion passed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Closing Remarks from President:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Pres. Clanton discussed the many topics discussed in the senate over the past academic year.\u00a0 These issues include (but are not limited to): Allusers emails, academic integrity, salary adjustments, ethics policy, parking appeals and the VPAA search.\u00a0 Many of these issues are still ongoing, thus Pres. Clanton expressed his desire that the faculty senate continue moving forward with these issues as well as others as they arise.\u00a0 He expressed his gratitude to the senate and stated that he looked forward to serving as a senator in the upcoming year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Seating of New Faculty Senators: <\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The following senators completed their 3 year terms \u2013 T. Daniels, B. Fincher, P. Clanton, and P. Boumtje<\/li>\n<li>The Faculty Senate welcomed the following new senators \u2013 C. Christensen, S. Paulson, D. Sanson and N. Dobbins<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Election of Senate Officers:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Elections were held and the Faculty Senate officers for next year are shown below:<\/p>\n<p>President \u2013 Scott White<\/p>\n<p>Vice President \u2013 Sam Riner<\/p>\n<p>Parliamentarian \u2013 Shannin Schroeder<\/p>\n<p>Secretary \u2013 Jennifer Logan<\/p>\n<p><em>Remarks from Faculty Senate President for 2012-2013:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>S. White thanked the outgoing senators for their service to the university and welcomed new senators.\u00a0 He discussed the need for better collaboration throughout the SAU campus and expressed his desire to make this a priority for the upcoming year.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Adjournment:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The motion to adjourn was made by T. Schroeder and seconded by J.
