Those in attendance were Beth Scroggins, Wayne Garner, Pam Vaughn (Kay Sawyer\u2019s proxy), Sarajane Telford, David Wingfield, Rebecca Chiles, Diane Johnson, Pat King, Cledis Stuart, Vera Camp, Brenda Garrett, Gaye Calhoun, Houston Taylor, Mark Trout.  Guests were Stacy Clanton, Tiffany Reeves, Mike Argo, and David Rankin.<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>Approval of Minutes<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p>The meeting was called to order.  A motion to accept the minutes was made by Wayne Garner.  Cledis Stuart seconded the motion.  Motion passed.<\/p>\n<p>Houston Taylor made a motion to table the business items until after Dr. David Rankin\u2019s presentation.  Motion seconded by Diane Johnson.  Motion passed.<\/p>\n<p>Presentation by Dr. David Rankin  to address the question \u201cWhat kind of University do we want to be?<\/p>\n<p>His presentation covered two areas:  Updates and A Vision for SAU\u2019s Future<\/p>\n<p>UPDATES<br \/>\n-Expansion of the Graduate School<br \/>\n&#8211;Online Master of Education in Elementary or Secondary Education<br \/>\n&#8211;Master of Science in Computer and Information Science<br \/>\n&#8211;Master of Public Administration<\/p>\n<p>-Athletic Training Program<br \/>\n&#8211;The Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) recently was<br \/>\naccredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health<br \/>\nEducation Programs (CAAHEP)<\/p>\n<p>-Proposed Band Hall<br \/>\n&#8211;The location would be behind Dolph Camp and a floor plan was shown.<\/p>\n<p>-Athletic Updates<br \/>\n&#8211;Artificial turf being installed on the football field<br \/>\n&#8211;New visitor\u2019s stand<br \/>\n&#8211;Wilkins Stadium Concession Stand<\/p>\n<p>-Proposed Walking Track (By a Donor) from Asbury Methodist Church to<br \/>\nUniversity Village<\/p>\n<p>-Development of new sign in front of Overstreet<\/p>\n<p>-Wharton Nursing<br \/>\n&#8211;Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree by the National League for<br \/>\nNursing Accrediting Commission is pending<br \/>\n&#8211;Addition to Nursing Building<\/p>\n<p>-Proposed Science &amp; Technology Center (Location behind the Duck Pond)<br \/>\n&#8211;Trying to get the appropriation bill for higher education back on the<br \/>\nballot so it would help us build the building<br \/>\n&#8211;The increase in the facility fee will go toward the Science Building<\/p>\n<p>A VISION FOR SAU\u2019S FUTURE\u2014THE CENTENNIAL AND BEYOND<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Rankin explained to the senate that a task force has been formed to help<br \/>\ndevelop the vision for SAU\u2019s future.  He asked for input as to where SAU<br \/>\nshould be in 25 years.<\/p>\n<p>This concluded Dr. Rankin\u2019s presentation.<\/p>\n<p>A motion was made by Rebecca Chiles to take items off table.  It was seconded by David Wingfield.  Motion passed.<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>Old Business<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p><u>Emergency Hires\u00a0<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Beth Scroggins reported that she had talked to Roger Giles about concerns regarding the hiring guidelines and he is addressing them. A comment was made about the newly created position for vice president of financial services and the way that the procedure had been handled.  Much discussion followed.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><u><strong>Committee Reports<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p><u>Faculty Senate<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Cledis reported that an update would be coming.<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>New Business<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p><u>Tuition Waivers\u00a0<\/u><\/p>\n<p>The question of making a policy to not refund staff\/faculty waivers was brought to the Senate.  Much discussion followed and Cledis made a motion to form a committee to investigate the issue.  This was seconded by Brenda Garrett.  Motion passed.<\/p>\n<p><u>Senator Elections\u00a0<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Mary Hubbard has agreed to get the election under way.  Other election committee members include Beth Scroggins, Gaye Calhoun, Houston Taylor and Paula Washington-Woods.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate would like to thank Mary Hubbard for handling this procedure.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><u>Questions Submitted<\/u><\/p>\n<p> What can Campus Security do to address the illegal parking at Peace Hall, Bussey Hall, and Communcations Center?<\/p>\n<p>Chief Chiles reported that since being made aware of this illegal parking she has checked these areas and written only one ticket.  She also stated that when this illegal parking is noticed please call 4100 to report it and security will be glad to go and write tickets.  Mark Trout added that he would talk to his employees about their illegal parking.<\/p>\n<p>Do the same working hours apply to all SAU employees?<\/p>\n<p>The consensus of the Sentate is that the working hours of employees should be between them and their supervisor.  Some positions are not 8-5 jobs.<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>Other<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p><u>Earl Miller Memorial<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Houston reported that permission has been given to place the memorial bench.  Minor repair is needed on the slab and then the bench will be placed.  The date for the dedication service will be discussed later.<\/p>\n<p>As a follow up to Dr. Rankin\u2019s presentation about the vision for SAU\u2019s future, Cledis mentioned that we should be thinking about what the staff senate should be contributing toward this vision.<\/p>\n<p>David Wingfield mentioned the slowness of the computers the past few weeks, and Mike Argo explained this problem had to do with our band width.  Hopefully this should improve in July when the new budget year starts and there would be money to increase our band width.<\/p>\n<p>The next meeting will be May 17 at 2:00 pm in Reynolds 210.<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>Adjournment<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p>A motion was made by Diane Johnson and seconded by Houston Taylor.
