Dr. Mohammad Islam obtained his B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (Dhaka, Bangladesh) in 1997. After working for Brown & Root Bangladesh Ltd. in commissioning, startup, and operations of a gas processing plant for three years, Dr. Islam pursued graduate degrees in Chemical Engineering at the University of Calgary – received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the Chemical & Petroleum Engineering department in 2003 and 2009, respectively. Dr. Islam started working for Alberta Innovates Technology Futures (AITF – provincial research organization of Alberta, Canada) in 2008 as a reservoir simulation engineer where he served Canadian and International oil & gas companies with enhanced oil recovery projects. In 2012, Dr. Islam joined Canada’s oil & gas major, Suncor Energy as a Senior Reservoir Engineer where he worked for three years conducting reservoir optimization and reservoir geomechanics studies. Since late 2015, Dr. Islam became a consultant – being affiliated with CGG Geoconsulting Group and BitCan G&E, he performed reservoir and geomechanics modelling studies for oil & gas clients such as, Cenovus Energy and Premier Oil. In Fall 2019, Dr. Islam joined Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) as an Adjunct Instructor where he taught math, science, and engineering courses to Petroleum Engineering Technology students. Dr. Islam also taught Thermodynamics to freshmen at the Concordia University as a Part Time Faculty in Spring 2021. Besides teaching Dr. Islam is also involved in research in methane pyrolysis and developed a conceptual process named ‘Thermo-Mechanical Pyrolysis’ which is undergoing ‘proof of concept’ research at the University of Saskatchewan with funding received from Mitacs (www.mitacs.ca). Dr. Islam also has a long history of research in reservoir engineering – enhanced oil recovery scheme development. Dr. Islam currently holds Professional Engineer (PEng) status with Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) and long-time member of Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE). In Spring of 2022, Dr. Islam joined SAU Engineering & Physics department as Assistant Professor where he is focused on teaching a wide variety of courses in Chemical Engineering.
