{"id":15,"date":"2008-01-23T09:33:49","date_gmt":"2008-01-23T17:33:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/students.southernarkansasuniversity.info\/ct\/?page_id=15"},"modified":"2026-02-24T14:11:44","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:11:44","slug":"emergency-procedures","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/web.saumag.edu\/counseling\/emergency-procedures\/","title":{"rendered":"Emergency Procedures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A counselor is available Monday through Friday 8:00-5:00 for emergencies.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>AFTER HOURS CALL THE UNIVERSITY POLICE DEPARTMENT AT (870) 235-4100<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Disruptive Behavior<\/li>\n<li>Suicidal concerns for self or others<\/li>\n<li>Rape\/Assault<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Disruptive Behavior<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Approach the person calmly.<\/li>\n<li>Call the person aside and try to move the person away from an audience or crowd.<\/li>\n<li>Inform the individual that his\/her conduct is disruptive and ask for his\/her cooperation. Tell them that if they refuse, they will be asked to leave the area.<\/li>\n<li>If the individual does not calm down or cooperate, call or have someone call the University Police at 235-4100 or 911 to request assistance. NOTE: Once the police arrive on the scene, they are in charge of the situation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do not<\/strong> attempt to restrain the person<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>Suicidal concerns for self or others<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>When a suicide ATTEMPT is made:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Call University Police at 235-4100 or 911 and state location on campus.<\/li>\n<li>Stabilize the victim and administer first aid.<\/li>\n<li>After medical help arrives, call the appropriate senior administrator<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em><strong>When a suicide THREAT is made:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>If the person is a student residing on campus, call the associate dean of student life, the residence hall men\u2019s coordinator or the women\u2019s area coordinator at 235-4041 or the Counseling Center at 235-4911, or contact the University Police at 235-4100.<\/li>\n<li>If the person is a student not residing on campus call the associate dean of student life at 235-4041 or the Counseling Center at 235-4911, or contact the University Police at 235-4100.<\/li>\n<li>If the person is a non-student or University employee, call the Counseling Center at 235-4911 or the University Police at 235-4100.<\/li>\n<li><strong>After 5:00pm in all instances, call the University Police at 235-4100.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>Rape\/Assault<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Call the University Police at 235-4100 or 911 and state location on campus.<\/li>\n<li>Secure the crime scene until police arrive. Do not allow anyone to enter the area and do not disturb the crime scene.<\/li>\n<li>Provide initial support for the victim. If the assault occurred in the residence hall notify the women&#8217;s (235-4041\/4367) and men&#8217;s area coordinators (235-4041\/4359) and close friends or significant others as requested by the victim.<\/li>\n<li>Contact the Counseling Center at 235-4911. <strong>If the victim chooses not to report the rape or assault to the police<\/strong>, a confidential report must be completed by the University employee to whom the rape was reported. The Student Right-to-Know Act requires that an accurate number of crimes be reported.
