Col. in first references only. Do not use a courtesy title such as Mr., Miss, or Ms. Use the last name only in subsequent references unless a title is necessary to identify persons with the same last name.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Ethnic Groups<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The preferred usage for African Americans is \u201cblack.\u201d The term is not capitalized.<\/li>\n<li>Preferred usage for Caucasians is \u201cwhite,\u201d also not capitalized.<\/li>\n<li>Preferred usage for Asian people is \u201cAsian,\u201d capitalized. Please note that in British usage the term applies only to people of the Indian Subcontinent.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cAmerican Indian,\u201d capitalized with no hyphen, is preferred over \u201cNative American.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Seasons<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Lowercase \u201cspring,\u201d \u201csummer,\u201d \u201cfall\u201d and \u201cwinter\u201d and derivatives such as \u201cwintertime\u201d unless part of a formal name: I love Paris in the springtime; the Winter Olympics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Inclusive language<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t say \u201che\u201d when referring to an unspecified person. Instead, rephrase the sentence into the plural, or avoid the use of pronouns altogether.\n<ul>\n<li>The students\u2019 papers are due on Tuesday.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Avoid gender-specific titles or terms.\n<ul>\n<li>Roger Giles is the vice president for administration and general counsel. Vice President Roger Giles will give the report.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Avoid stereotypes: Age, gender, national or ethnic background, disabilities need not be mentioned at all unless they are relevant to the story.<\/li>\n<li>Be sensitive.\n<ul>\n<li>people with hearing impairments (instead of the deaf), people with disabilities (instead of disabled or handicapped), a person with AIDS (instead of a victim of AIDS), a gay person (instead of homosexual), wheelchair-user (instead of wheelchair-bound).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alumni Identify past and current students by their class years with an apostrophe before the year.
