In my years working with students, there have been many times that I felt my interaction with a student should have begun much earlier.\u00a0 The final months of your senior year are not the time to begin your career planning.\u00a0 It should begin when you begin college, or possibly before.\u00a0 Below are a few important actions I believe students should take in order to successfully prepare for their chosen career field.<\/span><\/p>

\u2022 Explore<\/strong><\/h2>

\u2022 Conduct career exploration to learn more about what skills are required in your desired field, the job outlook for your potential career, annual salary expectation, and more. You can visit Career Services to help with this or you can do an online search if you are more comfortable with that.<\/span><\/p>

\u2022 Practice self-reflection.\u00a0 This can be helpful especially if you are unsure about your career path.<\/span><\/p>

\u2022 Seek out meaningful experiences<\/strong><\/h2>

\u2022 Whether it\u2019s a part-time job or volunteer commitment, look for ways to develop the skills needed in your particular career field.<\/span><\/p>

\u2022 Find an internship. Even if one is not required for your degree, it is a great way to gain experience, learn more about your field, and make contacts that can help you in the future.<\/span><\/p>

\u2022 Step up into leadership roles within your campus organizations and classes.<\/span><\/p>

\u2022 Find a mentor<\/strong><\/h2>

\u2022 Make contact with someone in your desired career field. Conduct informational interviews to learn more about their personal career journey, as well as about the industry they work in.<\/span><\/p>

\u2022 Be upfront with them about what you want to get out of the mentor\/mentee relationship.<\/span><\/p>

\u2022 Ask professors, family members, Career Services, etc. if they know someone you can contact.<\/span><\/p>

\u2022 If you aren\u2019t sure where to start, contact the Career Services office for help.\u00a0 We can facilitate a connection and educate you on professional communication.<\/span><\/p>

\u2022 Always be ready<\/strong><\/h2>

\u2022 Create your r\u00e9sum\u00e9 and continuously add to it.<\/span><\/p>

\u2022 You never know when an opportunity may present itself so be sure to have your r\u00e9sum\u00e9 ready at all times.<\/span><\/p>

\u2022 Have Career Services review your r\u00e9sum\u00e9 before you send it to a potential employer.<\/span><\/p>

\u2022 Enjoy the ride<\/strong><\/h2>

\u2022 Realize that you don\u2019t have to have it all figured out.<\/span><\/p>

\u2022 Try new and out-of-the-box experiences – part of determining what you love doing is finding out what you don\u2019t love doing.<\/span><\/p>

\u2022 Remember there are many people that are willing to help you! You don\u2019t have to go on this journey alone!<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Anne is the Director of Career Services here at Southern Arkansas University.
