My boss, Katie Tejeda, encouraged me to volunteer at every opportunity we had. Looking back, I am extremely grateful for that push; it helped me break out of my shell, meet new people, and explore different types of service until I found what truly fits me.

How has volunteering influenced your personal or professional growth?
Volunteering changed my perspective. It exposed me to new environments, new people, and new needs I hadn’t witnessed before. It helped me grow both personally and professionally, strengthening my confidence, responsibility, and sense of purpose.

What should people look for in a volunteer opportunity if they want it to lead to career growth?
Look for something that connects to your field. For example, if you’re studying social work or nursing, try volunteering at a nursing home or community care program. Choose opportunities that help you build relevant skills, something that grows you, not just fills hours.

Did any of your volunteer roles lead directly to a job or internship?
Yes! My volunteer involvement and experience working under the previous volunteer coordinator directly led to the role I hold now. Volunteering built up my experience, my reputation, and my relationships, which opened the door.

What skills did you develop through volunteering that you might not have gotten elsewhere?
Volunteering taught me to be appreciative, grateful, and understanding. It improves empathy and patience, and it teaches you how to work with different people and situations.

How does volunteering continue to influence your career decisions and values?
Volunteering keeps me grounded in the value of helping others. It reminds me that the work I do should have an impact and that serving people matters.

What advice would you give students or job seekers considering volunteering to explore career opportunities?

Volunteering is one of the best ways to get your foot in the door. It helps you build connections, improve communication, become more adaptable, and network with people who can open doors to opportunities. But most importantly, it reminds you how much we need humanity and how good it feels to make a difference.

       Kristyn Creel

Kristyn is a graduate of SAU with a degree in Financial Wealth and Management, earned in the Spring of 2025.
