This is an interview with a Southern Arkansas University alumna and the Director of Volunteer Services at SAU, Mrs. Kathy Gean. <\/span><\/p>

What was your first volunteering experience, and what motivated you to get involved?<\/span><\/b><\/p>

Growing up in a small community, I quickly became aware of the significant needs of local nonprofits, and I felt strongly about giving back to the community I love. I began volunteering with the Magnolia Junior Charity League, where I served on many committees and as President. I also served as President of Partners in Education and have been a board member for the South Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and the Magnolia Arts Council. Currently, I serve on the Magnolia Regional Medical Center Foundation Board. I have also chaired the Magnolia Blossom Festival and served as an Elder and Treasurer at First Presbyterian Church. In addition, I regularly volunteer at the local homeless shelter and occasionally at Compassion\u2019s Foundation.<\/p>

How has volunteering influenced your personal or professional growth?<\/span><\/b><\/p>

Without exception, every volunteer experience has given me lifelong friendships and valuable connections that have enriched my life in countless ways. These relationships and experiences have made my life better and have often helped me professionally, especially when seeking support for other projects.<\/p>

What should people look for in a volunteer opportunity if they want it to lead to career growth?<\/span><\/b><\/p>

Choose projects that genuinely interest you. When you enjoy what you\u2019re doing, it feels less like work and more like fun. Look for opportunities that align with your skills and your future goals.<\/p>

Did any of your volunteer roles lead directly to a job opportunity or internship?<\/span><\/b><\/p>

Yes, many of my volunteer roles have led to catering jobs for my side business. I often donate catering services to nonprofit events, which has opened the door for paid opportunities through people I\u2019ve volunteered with or guests who attended an event I catered for.<\/p>

What skills did you develop through volunteering that you might not have had elsewhere?<\/span><\/b><\/p>

Time management is the number one skill I developed. It\u2019s important to make any project as time efficient as possible for yourself and for others who are giving their time. Even finding time to volunteer requires careful planning and organization.<\/p>

How do you think volunteering continues to influence your career decisions and values?<\/span><\/b><\/p>

The importance of giving back and helping others has become a guiding principle in my life. It\u2019s a habit and a value that influences both my personal and professional decisions.<\/p>

What advice would you give to students or job seekers considering volunteering to explore career opportunities?<\/span><\/b><\/p>

Volunteering is an excellent source for networking. It is a chance to show people who you are, that you can be trusted, and that you are dependable. Treat volunteer projects like a paid job (show up as expected, do your best), and it will be noticed. Likewise, it will be noted if you are NOT!<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Kathy Gean is the Director of Volunteer Services at SAU. She graduated in 1981 with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing. She spent the majority of her career in retail, managing, and then owning a store just off the Magnolia downtown square.
