SAU Big Band<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The SAU Big Band is the premier jazz ensemble, serving as a cornerstone of SAU Bands. The group presents multiple performances throughout the year, both in Magnolia and across the surrounding four-states region, offering students consistent opportunities to engage with live audiences and develop their artistry.<\/p>\n

Comprised of students representing Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma, the ensemble reflects a diverse range of backgrounds and majors, contributing to a dynamic and collaborative musical environment, working together to achieve a high standard of performance.<\/p>\n

Jazz Audition Guidelines<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Jazz Auditions take place at the beginning of the Fall semester. This audition includes performing a short etude, an optional solo, major and chromatic scales, and rhythm sections. You may email the Jazz Director, Jason Smith, about suitable repertoire.<\/p>

Jazz Students interested in auditioning for a band scholarship, see the audition<\/a> guidelines. The Southern Arkansas Jazz Festival<\/strong> is an annual event hosted at Southern Arkansas University that brings together high school ensembles, university musicians, and guest artists for a focused experience in jazz performance and education.<\/p>

Participating groups perform for experienced educators and take part in masterclasses that address improvisation, ensemble playing, and stylistic concepts within the jazz tradition. The festival provides an opportunity for high school bands from across the region to present their work while receiving practical feedback in a supportive setting.<\/p>
