The Associate of Science in Education Middle School degree is designed for candidates to be middle level paraprofessionals. Candidates in the program can also work toward admission to the four-year degree after the ASE to become licensed middle school teachers.
Associate of Arts in Teaching – Middle School Education (AAT)

The Associate of Arts in Teaching- Middle School Education (MSED) presents core knowledge of the education profession by combining content and pedagogical knowledge. Students demonstrate a basic understanding of the teaching profession and adolescents. The program emphasizes the uniqueness of each child, recognizing that children are best understood in the context of family, culture, society, and environment. The Associate of Arts in Teaching- MSED allows candidates to choose 2 of the 4 content areas as their concentrations. The dual focus areas provide pre-service teachers training to be more effective teachers, teach in multi-subject classrooms, or choice in a single or integrated subject classroom from their chosen concentration areas. Options include: Math/Science (STEM), Language Arts/Social Studies, Language Arts/Math, Language Arts/Science, Math/Social Studies, and Science/Social Studies. This AAT will allow candidates to work in schools as paraprofessionals or to continue on to obtain their Bachelor’s in Middle School Education. To obtain an Associate of Arts in Teaching, the student must earn at least a grade point average of 2.70 on all University credits, and complete the required curriculum (major courses with a C or higher). Students earning an AAT- MSED will complete 61-63 hours, depending on content concentration areas, that include the following requirements.

*Students choosing a math or science concentration will require MATH 1023 College Algebra for the general education mathematics requirement to meet the prerequisites for other coursework. MATH 1053 Mathematical Literacy is recommended for students who choose Language Arts/Social Studies as their concentration areas.
*Students choosing the math and science concentration will take PHYS 2003/2001 College Physics I/Lab for their general education physical science requirement.
