Versina S. (Brown) Gooden

Terry Hill
Participant from 1985-1987. Graduated from Magnolia High School in 1987.
Former president of the Upward Bound Student Council. Enlisted in the United
States Navy Delayed Entry program on July 30, 1990. Attended Interior
Communication Electrician “A” & “C” schools. He reported aboard the USS
Joseph F Hewes FFT 1078 on November 1991 to June 1994. On board the
Hewes, he obtained his Enlisted Surface Warfare Qualification (ESWS) and
numerous other qualifications. He was promoted from E-3 to E-5 or Interior
Communication Electrician Fireman to a second class petty officer. He reported
on board Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity (SIMA) from June 1994 to
July 1997. He was awarded his first Navy Achievement Medal and Volunteer
Service Medal. He qualified as a Quality Control Inspector, Safety Petty Officer,
and team leader for calibration of equipment on FFG’s and DDG’s platforms.
He reported to Naval Station Great Lakes in August to December of 1997 where
he graduated from Site Television School. He reported on board the USS Stephen
W. Groves FFG-29 in December 1997. He qualified as Leading Petty Officer,
Command Managed Equal Opportunity leader, and lead instructor for the
indoctrination coordinator for newly reporting personnel. He was promoted to
First Class Petty Officer and received his second Navy Achievement Medal. He
attended Naval Station Pensacola for Instructor training and reported aboard
Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth Texas in November of 2000. He
was promoted to Chief Petty Officer in September of 2001. He was awarded a
Commendation Medal, third Navy Achievement Medal, Master Training
Specialist, and numerous other awards. He transferred to USS SIMPSON
FFG-56 in Mayport, FL in December of 2004 after attending the (3MC)
Maintenance Coordinator school in Kings Bay, GA. He was stationed aboard the
USS Simpson for fourteen months and was promoted to Senior Chief Petty
Officer in April 2005. He attended the Senior Enlisted academy from June to July
of 2005. He currently reported on board the Navy and Marine Corp Reserve
Center Orlando in August 2005 for three years of duty. He is currently the Senior
Enlisted Leader and Training Officer. He is married with four girls; Chantey 17,
Kymyara 16, Oceana 15, and from his current marriage, Gillian 2.

Giles Willis
Participant from 1992-94. Graduated Salutatorian from Lewisville High School in
1994. Graduated from the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff in 1999 with a BS in
Biology and a minor in Chemistry. In May 2003, Giles received a Doctor of
Dental Surgery degree from Howard University College of Dentistry. He
is currently living in Yonkers, NY and doing his residency at Our Lady of Mercy
