Online Readiness Self-Assessment

Respond Yes or No to each of the following statements:

1. I have access to:
   1. A computer with a recent operating system (either Windows or Macintosh) installed
   2. A reliable internet connection
   3. The latest version of browser software (FireFox, Netscape, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Apple Safari)
   4. Microsoft Word or a Rich Text Format word processing program
   5. A software program that reads PDF files
   6. A software media program that can access video files such as Apple Quicktime or Microsoft Media Player
   7. A software program that reads PowerPoint slides
   8. Software required by the course I am considering enrolling in
2. I understand basic computer terminology: monitor, CPU, mouse, keyboard, RAM, hard drive, floppy disk, smart drive, etc.
3. I am able to configure my browser so that Java and JavaScript are enabled, cache is set to reload the page each time, cookies are enabled, and pop-up blockers are disabled.
4. I have an e-mail address and know how to send messages and attach documents using e-mail.
5. I know how to use online search engines, download and save information from websites, download and view PDF files, download and install media player.
6. I am able to create, revise, move, and rename word processing documents files, and create and manage document folders.
7. I know how to save a word processing document in rich text format (*.rtf) or web page format (*.htm, *.html).
8. I have some experience with chat rooms and/or discussion boards.
9. I am self-motivated, self-disciplined, and can work independently of others.
10. I have college-level reading skills and enjoy reading.
11. I can express myself well through written communication and am able to follow written instructions.
12. I can devote three hours a week per credit hour to my studies (i.e. if you are taking six credit hours, you should be able to devote 18 hours per week).
13. I do not put off doing assignments until the day before they are due.
14. I am responsible for what I learn.
15. I will not hesitate to ask for help from my instructor.

If you have answered “yes” to 12 or more of these statements, you are capable of taking an online class.

If you have answered “yes” to 8 or more but less than 12, you might be successful in an online class but will need to seek help in improving your weaknesses.

If you have answered “yes” to less than 8, you should delay taking an online class until you become more familiar with online learning and have improved your computer skills.
