Health, Kinesiology, and Recreation

Chair: Steve Dingman, M.Ed

The Health, Kinesiology, and Recreation department is housed in the W.T. Watson Sports Complex and Kathryn Brown Wellness and Education Center. The HKR department currently offers four distinct degree programs (teaching and non-teaching degrees). The teaching degree that is available to students is the physical education, wellness, and leisure degree. Non-teaching degree options are: human performance, recreation, and community service degree, exercise science degree , and the athletic training education program.

Physical Education, Wellness, and Leisure Degree

  • A degree that prepares students to teach physical education and health in elementary or secondary schools.
  • The degree that students receive is a bachelor of science in education (B.S.E). The degree includes a major in k-12 physical education, wellness, and leisure, and a coaching endorsement.
  • Students are encouraged to seek an additional minor field of study to improve their marketablity. This minor may be in addition to or in place of the coaching endorsement.
  • Students have the opportunity to complete a total of three internships as they progress through the curriculum.

Human Performance, Recreation, and Community Service Degree

  • The degree that students receive is a bachelor of science (B.S.).
  • This is a non-teaching degree.
  • Prepares students for a career organizing and directing recreational programs.
  • The two areas of emphasis that the student can focus on are community service or sports management.
  • Opportunities are available for students to participate in various internships as they progress through the curriculum.

Exercise Science

  • The degree that students receive is a bachelor of science (B.S.).
  • This is a non-teaching degree.
  • Prepares students for careers as personal trainers, working with athletes in sports programs, performing physical assessments for employment/disability, and working in cardiac or pulmonary rehabilitation programs.
  • The student is involved in many laboratory and laboratory-related classes during the last two years of the degree, with the final semester consisting of an externship to allow the student hands-on training.
