Important Notice
Test takers will only be required to pay the registration fee once per testing year, instead of every time they register.

ETS has a limited quantity of 2008-09 Registration and Information Bulletins sent to test centers. As a result, we only will have a few bulletins available in the office. ETS has provided flyers with test date information and how to access their website to download the PRAXIS Bulletin (including the registration form). The flyers also instruct examinees how to:

  • register for PRAXIS paper-based tests
  • get the most up-to-date listings of test centers
  • find accurate lists of the state agencies approved to receive PRAXIS scores
  • see current state test requirements
  • access PRAXIS test preparation materials (Tests At A Glance or TAAG) and services
  • find answers to frequently asked questions

Purpose

The PRAXIS Series is an Educational Testing Services (ETS) program which provides test and other services for states to use as a part of their teacher certification process. The three categories of assessments in the PRAXIS Series correspond to the three milestones in the development of a teacher: entering the teacher training program, graduating from college and entering the profession, and the first year of teaching. The state of Arkansas requires prospective teachers to take the PRAXIS I (Reading, Mathematics, and Writing) and the following tests of the PRAXIS II Series: Principles of Learning and Teaching or Pedogogy, and the Specialty Area tests. Teacher candidates should consult the PRAXIS website or their State Department’s website for current requirements.

Description

PRAXIS I: Academic Skills Assessments measures reading, writing, and mathematical skills. The assessments are available in two formats, paper-based or computer-based. Either format is acceptable. Each measures the basic academic skills vital to all teacher candidates. The PRAXIS I is one of the requirements for entrance into the teacher’s education program at Southern Arkansas University.

  • Paper-based Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) in Reading and Mathematics are one-hour multiple choice tests. The Writing test includes both a 30 minute multiple-choice and a 30 minute essay section.
  • PRAXIS I Computer Based Test (PI-CBT) in Reading, Mathematics, and Writing contain computer delivered questions that require selecting single or multiple responses, highlighting or reordering information, or providing a constructed response. Each testing session is two hours to allow sufficient time for tutorials on computer use, the test itself, and the collection of background information for score reporting

PRAXIS II: Subject Assessments measures knowledge the candidate will teach. They also measure the general and subject-specific pedagogical skills and knowledge. The tests are paper-based tests. The PRAXIS II: Subject Assessments tests required for certification by the State of Arkansas include:

  • Principles of Learning and Teaching. Students enrolled in Southern Arkansas University’s Teacher Education Program must pass one Principles of Learning and Teaching test in his/her specific teaching area prior to student teaching.
  • Subject Assessments/Specialty Area Tests. Students enrolled in Southern Arkansas University’s Teacher Education Program must pass their specialty area test(s) prior to student teaching.

Standby Testing

Standby testing has been replaced with an Emergency Registration period, which allows the test taker to register after the late registration deadline, and guarantees a seat at the testing center. Standby testing will no longer be available.

Scores

For paper-based tests, score reports will be mailed approximately four to six weeks after the test date. For computer-based PPST tests, an examinee can view his/her score immediately upon completion of the Reading and Mathematics test, but not the Writing test. Official score reports from the computer-based tests are mailed two to three weeks after the test date.
