A Neurolinguistic Approach to Cognitive Development and English Literacy
Southern Arkansas University and The Riggs Institute formed a partnership to offer six semester credit hours for a course entitled “A Neurolinguistic Approach to Cognitive Development and English Literacy”. In this course trainees work with a long-distance instructor to complete a 360 hour practicum (60 hours of study plus 2.5 hours daily implementing in the classroom over a six-month period).
The Writing and Spelling Road to Reading and Thinking (WSRRT) Teacher’s Edition incorporates fully developed daily lesson plans (many with multi-sensory, direct, and Socratic student/teacher dialogue) to teach listening, speaking, letter formation, oral comprehension and vocabulary, phonemic/graphemic awareness, spelling (with “explicit” phonetics, 47 rules of spelling including plurals, syllabication, use of apostrophes and capitalization, and a mnemonic marking system), composition, reading, print comprehension, further print vocabulary development in prefixes, suffixes, paronyms, homonyms, homophones, homographs, grammar, syntax, analytical, and inferential thinking, all cross referenced to 27 auditory, verbal, visual, and motor cognitive developmental subskills. The trainee is expected to cover 24 academic weeks of such instruction to students in a classroom setting.
