Academic standards
Congratulations to those of you who have made it through your first year as the parent of a college student. My hope is that every student has been successful; my experience tells me that this would not be the case. With that in mind, I want to share with you the requirements students must maintain to be in good academic standing;
| Hours attempted | Required Cumulative Grade Point Average |
|---|---|
| 1-29 | 1.50 |
| 30+ | 2.00 |
A student who does not earn the required cumulative grade point average according to the number of semester hours attempted will be placed on academic probation. A student who has been placed on academic probation will have until the end of the next regular semester to show significant improvement in grades or be suspended from school. Significant improvement shall be defined as follows:
| Total Hours Attempted | Grade Point Average Earned (including probationary in Probationary Semester semester) |
|---|---|
| 1-29 | 1.75 |
| 30+ | 2.00 |
The student’s final grade report will reveal if the student is on academic probation or suspension. For more information about academic standards, please refer to the 2008-09 SAU Catalog, page 27.
Many students will end their first year earning honors for their grade point averages:
- Dean’s List: Students who earn 12 semester hours or more on the Magnolia campus during a regular semester and earn a 3.50 grade point average or higher.
- President’s List: Students who earn 12 semester hours or more on the Magnolia campus during a regular semester and earn a 4.00 grade point average.
Students who earn a place on the Dean’s List or President’s List will have their names and appropriate information sent to the local newspaper that was indicated on their application for admission. A complete list is published in the local newspaper, The Banner News.
